O2 Connection Manager - Macbook Pro 2013 OSX 10.9

Hi all,

I don't seem to be able to get "O2 Connection Manager" to work on a new Macbook Pro (running Mavericks). It worked on my 2011 Mac with Lion and still does on my Win 8 PC (used for testing the dongle!).

Each time I try to open the [O2] connection manager I am left with an error message "thebillingday is a required value." before the application closes. Unfortunately, you cannot set the Billing Date until you (successfully) open the programme - which is something I'm unable to do due to the crash.

After a gruelling experience with the 'helpful' O2 support team, I'm informed they are under the impression that this software 'works fine' and it is not something they can help with (and that took three people and over an hour!).

I suspect that this may be a compatibility issue, however, on the off chance (as I'm stuck without internet whilst out of the office until O2 decide they need to update their software) - has anyone managed to get this to work on Mavericks?

O2 Connection Manager version: 8.8

Many thanks,

Rob

Sorry to hear you're facing the same problem Dylan. You prompted me to try something I thought about the other night - and it works.

Whilst I still have absolutely no luck with O2 Connection Manager, you can still connect to the internet (at least I can with the Alcatel X230D modem supplied to me):

1: Go to System Preferences > Network

2: Select 'HSPA Data Card' from the options on the left. The Telephone Number, Account Name and Password should already be populated (mine was all just sat there).

3: Click 'Connect' - mine found a 'connection' within seconds but took a further 20 seconds before it actually let me access the internet.

Hope this is of help to those who didn't know there was another way.

Cheers

Edit: Quick note - I also prefer this method than the bloated O2 software - the downside is that you don't have the visual reminder of bandwith used.

Hi,

I've just bought the same Alcatel X230D dongle and am experiencing a similar problem to Sawtest: my MBP on OSX 10.9.1 does not even see (in Finder) that the dongle has even been plugged in, even though the green light on the dongle is flashing (which indicates it is registering on the O2 3G network). However, the dongle is present in the System Preferences/Network panel as an "HSPA Data Card", and it has all the correct settings for connecting via O2, but hitting "Connect" brings up the immediate error message "The communication device selected for your connection does not exist. Verify your settings and try reconnecting." Seems like a 10.9.1 glitch ...

I've got the same problem - just spent half-hour on the online help chat & then 50 minutes on the phone trying to resolve the issue but no joy. Tech guy (who was admittedly very helpful if completely flummoxed) finally said the only advice he could offer was to take my Mac into the O2 store & see if I had any joy with a different dongle (I'm using a Huawei E173)

It was working fine on Mavericks until O2 updated their software & reading their user guide to the new software for my dongle it would appear their software update doesn't include Mavericks so I'm guessing it's a compatability issue, though it's interesting to note not one of the six people I've now spoken to at O2 regarding this issue has asked what version OS I'm running on the Mac...

Update - I went into an O2 store last week to ask a 'Guru'! He said they now don't sell the USB dongles for Mac users as none of them work!! He suggested trying another carriers USB dongle. Not at all helpful when I'm on contract with O2.

They do now sell a Mifi device which will work but you're looking at £75 for the hardware.

So here is where I now am: when I bought them a couple of days ago, neither of the two (identical) dongles (both Alcatel X230D) worked properly in my Mac (a 2011 MBP, running OSX 10.9.1). The dongle did not show up in Finder, but did make an appearance in System Preferences>Network as an "HSPA Data Card", but hitting the "Connect" button here resulted in a "device does not exist" error message.

But they both worked just fine in my other latop, which is an Acer running Windows 8. And when I took the new SIM cards out of the new Alcatel dongles and put them in my (3 year old) Huawei PAYG O2 dongle and connected it to my Mac, they both worked just fine through the existing O2 Connection Manager.

Now what I've discovered today is that if I now plug the new Alcatel dongle into my Mac, then go to System Preferences>Network>HSPA Data Card and check the box marked "Show modem status in Menu bar", then take the dongle out of the USB port, then put it back in the USB port, then go to the Modem Status icon on the Menu bar and click on "Connect HSPA Data Card", hey presto, it connects to the O2 3G network. But despite this, the dongle is still not present in Finder and cannot be controlled via the O2 Connection Manager, as the O2 Connection Manager cannot see it.

But I can connect now, so that's a big plus.

That's very interesting to hear sawtest - I wonder if that's the response I'll get when I visit my local store tomorrow

Seems odd though if their store gurus are saying that, why are the online guru's and technical department of the customer service line not giving out the same info? I'm also on contract but if they can't get it sorted tomorrow in store I'll be demanding they cancel it early without cost to me. Think you should do the same - if they argue you can point out that making you pay for a service you cannot receive is actually fraud.

Okay, well yesterday I visited my local store but they said they couldn't help me as they don't have a guru... got told to go to a store that's 35 miles away as it's the closest one that does!

As I've got no way of getting to the other store easily (and really who wants to make a 70mile round trip to try something that might not even work?!) I phoned up today to get them to cancel the account early. Explained the problem to a very nice lady in billing who is the first person to check if I have updated my Mac software since buying the dongle - after I said yes I had and that I had checked the software update for my dongle & it doesn't cover the current OS I'm using she asked me to hold while she went to check if there was anything they could do. Three minutes later she was back with the offer of sending out a brand new dongle free of charge to see if that would solve the compatability issue.

Should have the new dongle by Monday at the latest and we'll see if it works, but why the **** they haven't offered to do this previously is beyond me! Obviously talking to the tech guys isn't the way to go!
