Q: Random Restarts - "Sleep Wake Failure" - 10.9 Mavericks

I recently upgraded my 2009 Unibody White MacBook to 10.9 Mavericks from 10.8 Mountain Lion. Since upgrading I began experiencing random restarts while using the computer. The screen will turn off and then after a few moments the startup chime will play and the computer will boot.

I've had this happen 5 times this week, and Console creates logs for "Sleep Wake Failure". A sample of one of these logs is below.

I have seen a couple scattered reports from other Macbook and Macbook Pro users experiencing this issue on 10.9, however I'm not sure if its Mavericks related or hardware related, and I have not found a solution yet.

When I disconnect all USB devices, the Sleep Wake Failer does not seem to happen. I think the problem is this one of the USB drivers or maybe the USB firmware.

Don't know if it is relevant but from the crash dump concole log I always seem to get:

"Power Source:    0 samples on Battery, 0 samples on AC, 26 samples Unknown" near the top of the log (not going to post the entire log !!!

My MacBook has always been closed with no mains adapter when the crash occurs but it seems strange that it cannot establish the power source.  Maybe there is an explanation but I don't understand enough system internals to know what exactly is going on here.

I have the same issue with a mid 2011 iMac 27 since months. There is a iomega USB portable drive connected when the Sleep Wake Failure happens. Always! When I remove the drive it never happened during the last months since Mavericks. Always when I connect the disk it happens practically immediatly. And yes, I use the drive to make a backup.

So, I started to live with it. Once a week I make this backup with the "old" backup program from Apple. I do this in addition to Time Machine. After the backup I remove the drive and everything's fine.

I know there are users that don't have anything connected and still have this issue, but for me the solution is absolutely clear.

I'm also having Sleep Wake Failures on my MacBook Pro 2012 (unibody, MacBookPro9,1).  No external displays, no external USB devices, no Bluetooth devices.  The only time it happens for me is when I grab my computer after it's been charging for a while.  If I don't disconnect the power adapter until after I've woken the computer, everything seems fine.  If I disconnect the power adapter before attempting to wake it, then I usually hear the optical drive reset and know that the machine forced itself to reboot.

I had seen a similar issue on Mountain Lion.  Under 10.8, if I waited to unplug the power adapter until after I had woken the computer, I had no issues.  If I disconnected it before waking the computer, however, then the computer would take a long, long time to wake.  Often times, I'd have a black screen for up to 60 seconds.  The machine never rebooted, though, nor did I receive any error messages.  It would eventually wake right up, like nothing happened.  I assumed it was something with the change in battery power state.

Nothing I've tried has helped resolve the issue in Mavericks.  Initially, I thought a SMC or PRAM reset would solve it.  Then I thought it had something to do with some software I was running, so I did a vanilla installation of Mavericks on a separate partition.  It still happened then.  The one thing I didn't consider was the security setting to prompt for password on wake.  That was the same between my production and test partitions.  I'll try with that off and see if I can reproduce the issue.

My wife's new MacBook Air 2013 11" has not exhibited any of these issues under Mavericks, with which it came preinstalled.

Same thing here with a MacBookPro10,1. Problem started after I upgraded from 10.8 to 10.9 and still exists in 10.9.1. It occurs with and without external displays, USB harddisks, etc. Even a plain machine with no devices connected running on battery just randomly restarts with a Sleep Wake Failure when I just close it.

Yes, exactly, my WD MyBook "wall plug in" drive has to be ejected and discconnected or it's Sleep Wake Failure multiple times a day.

I also had one occurence of this bug, and will let you know if it becomes recurrent.

The strange thing is: it never happened on my first installation of Mavericks on top of Mountain Lion (which had also been installed on top of Lion), and last night, on a fresh install of Mavericks, it just did.

FWIW, I did recently tear open my 27'' iMac11,1 Core i5 2.66 to replace both the optical drive with an SSD and the WD drive (which wasn't the original anymore, but since I had replaced the original 1TB Caviar Black with a 2TB Caviar Green I wanted to improve performance) with a Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM, and made a Fusion Drive with those. I took out the HD thermal sensor cable as well, as it became worthless, and am now using HDD Fan Control (Fujitsu, WD and Seagate thermal sensor cables are mutually incompatible, but the Seagate drive is so much cheaper than the WD one that having to buy that software pays off in the end and is probably a smarter temp. management solution than the original anyway as it also uses SMART data and allows for finer control) in tandem with smcFanControl to control all of my system fans instead (but I don't think either caused the problem anyway, as I have been using smcFanControl since I bought the computer and under SL, because of its early graphics glitches that I believe were temp. related and which were addressed later with firmware updates… In fact, if it weren't for smcFanControl, I probably would have never detected the failure of my CPU fan before some serious temperature damage – or, in the least, system hangups – occured).

I also have a LaCie Quadra permanently hooked up via FW800 for Time Machine, which I also upgraded with a WD Caviar Green (unfortunately, some specific LaCie firmware is required for the HD inside to shut itself off when sleep mode kicks in when in “auto power” mode, so I've been manually ejecting it and turning it off when I remember to). To top it off, I will be upgrading it to Kensington 1333 RAM (supposedly and officially incompatible with my model, but there is proof that the LGA1156 models' Intel chipset actually supports it) and swap the 2.66 GHz i5 I5-750 processor with a 2.93 GHz i7 I7-870, which will introduce yet more variables in the matrix…

I sincerely hope that this is but an OS issue that will eventually get fixed under 10.9.2 or 10.9.3 and that I won't get any more weirdness from my bold (and pretty much unsupported and borderliner kludgy) upgrades… :\

    Good day Mainyehc, hi all,

Well, I'm having the same problem. It never happened on my installation of Mavericks over Mountain Lion. But recently I thought it might be a great idea doing a fresh install, making the system run smoother. I couldn't be more wrong ...

It happens between zero and two times a day so far and I have no idea what could cause it. Reading on the issue of others, there's no definite fix it seems. Nonetheless I'll try to disconnect a couple of thinks like USB hubs and drives and will see how that goes. I'll report if I find out something.

By the way I'm also on an 11,3 iMac 27", with FireWire and USB drives connected.

Seems like Apple spoiled a new OS the very first time for me. Besides the above issue I also have loads of problems with different FireWire 800 drives, which don't sleep anymore when the iMac sleeps. That wasn't an issue before and I was already thinking about downgrading ...

I was having this problem with a MacBook Pro. I turned off the "Automatic Login" in the Security & Privacy preferences and it went away. After a reboot I disabled  "Automatic Login" again and the problem hasn't yet returned. This can also be done in "Login Options" under the Users & Groups preferences.
