What has happened to Apple?

Okay. I've been an Apple fan since the beginning, but things are falling apart... Mavericks is buggy. Mac Mail hangs ALL OF THE TIME.. I've never had to force quit as much as I do now. My iPhone/iPad is buggy and iTunes is just going nuts. If I go to a song, it just starts flipping out and moving to other songs (and it never did that before)... Sometimes when I end a call, it never ends until I shut down my iPhone and restart it... And don't get me started on final CutPro X. I really hope that Apple follows Steve Job's ideas, because since his passing, Apple has not been as reliable and as awesome as it used to be.. Please fix... I'm using the latest MBP Retina and newest iMac and iPhone. (I liked the way it was. I wish I could downgrade)... Thanks..

iMac, Latest OS

There are a lot of us long-time Apple product owners out here who feel the same way. I have Mac with older OS (SL, Lion & Mtn Lion), and after reading all the problems with Mavericks I will NOT upgrade--ever. I waited a long time to upgrade to Lion and Mtn Lion was forced on me because I bought a refurbed 2011 iMac (because they still have an optical drive--don't get me started on that omission starting in 2012) and it came with it.

Both my sisters also lament the downward slide of quality control in Apple products. One just bought the newest MBP with Mavericks, only to find she will be FORCED to use iCloud because there is no ability to sync to a computer. We have a lot of CDs and audiobooks NOT through iTunes (ever hear of free music and audiobook CDs from the library we are allowed to put on our computers?), and now there is NO way to put them on a Mavericks computer. Apparently, this was not mentioned in all the hype over Mavericks. Latest and greatest??? No, worst and "worser."

Have you seen the latest iCloud version of iWork? OMIG, it's not worth the digital imprint it takes up in cyberspace. You can't do anything with Pages but the most, most, most basic commands. Of course, it's "Free." Don't bother taking this free offer.

I'm mad at Steve Jobs for not getting the surgery at a point that would have saved his life--at least for a few more years. I can't believe that he would let all this shoddiness slip through to the customers.

Apple seems to pander to the younger, newer purchaser who doesn't know any better, and us loyal long-time Apple product users be damned!

It's almost enough to make me switch to PCs...although who knows how they've changed things since I left them behind? I will say the Samsung phone screens are MUCH easier to read than the iPhone, and I've been tempted to switch to Android iOS to get one.

I have an "Orchard" of Apple products, and even though they are aging, I don't plan to add anymore as long as I am able to use what I have.

Have you considered it could be older software that has been kept on the system (I'm assuming you did an upgrade install). Sometimes it just isn't compatible, but since it is third party there are few signs it needs an update.

Lots of issues appearing in succession indicate there could be something wrong at a system level.

This creates a nice system report…

It should help anyone point out things that you may be missing if you post it here.

Mavericks may need a few point release updates before it gets to the same stability as older OS X releases. I'm not sure why everyone thinks the first release will be stable for everyone during the first 2 weeks. Historically there have always been issues with major OS versions, but people were slower to upgrade because of the need for obtaining physical disks. The App Store can speed up the release of fixes, but Apple will still need time to investigate, squash the bugs, test them and roll out updates.

If you are getting crash reports ensure you submit them to Apple, otherwise they may never look into it and nothing will change.

I know it's disappointing when past experiences were better, but lets have a go at troubleshooting it before abandoning the tools that we came to love 🙂

I would be just another one to say, and do, I think the same about this release.

Of course every release has bugs. We know.

However, it would be expected on new features.

What is so surprising is the fact that a lot of bugs concern stuff that worked like a charm in 10.8.5 (better to speak of degeneration)

To many major and well used options fail, and you might wonder if and when 10.9 will be a real upgrade of 10.8.5. An improvement with new features. Not with less.

Amen. I am a die hard and have supported 100% - standing up to all who question (despite all the inexcusable issues). Apple has become The Man it always fought. I dont even care about how much money they make -- just having a decent product - one that marginally works . . . and doesnt take hours of my day I will never get back. Can't believe even Steve would have put up with this as a consumer. He woudl probably have a Surface (I havenet touched one yet but there is no way it is worse than status quo Apple products).

Embarassing how many Apple products I have and number of family/friends I have converted.

I noticed before (first w/snow leopard, then w/mountain lion) LONG before maverick, there were certain "behavioral pattern's" that made the mail app annoying. It's temperamental when it comes to having more than one e-mail address, let alone w/different email provider's. (and I do). It prioritizes my mail not the way I want it to, but anything Apple is assured to have top billing. Now I simply don't use mail.app for, umm, mail. This is not a compliment or insult. Just an observation.

At this point, I am going to use the "mail.app" w/iCloud as an experiment. Just see what and how things happen. I'll be recording this if anyone is interested. Yeah, I need to get out more...Maybe later.

Just installed Mavericks. Clumsy handling of finder window tabs, TotalFinder does it far better but Mavericks has mucked up its functioning. For Mail, I've preferred Thunderbird for years and it seems fine.

MacBook Air now much slower to open.

I'm horrified to read about the forced use of iCloud. The latest MacBooks have so little storage Apple is clearly looking to corral all users into iCloud.

I'm going to bite the bullet and downgrade back to Mountain Lion (if I can) and replace any machines with recent used.

Interesting. Too soon into Maverick to know my head from my, um feet. But as much as I liked Mountain Lion, one thing annoyed me (still does). I can't get the "Safari/Lion-Maverick etc" "help" glossary/and specifics unless I'm on-line.

From the standpoint (IMO) of happy customers, it "requires" me to be online just to get basic system info. If some marketing genius thought this would make one more slavishly beholden to Apple, the result is the opposite.

For as long as I can remember (my first Mac was an SE/30) every X.0 release has been followed by an X.1 release that fixed a slew of bugs. Don't forget Apple has moved to a yearly release with Mt Lion being mostly a refinement of Lion but Mavericks having a significant amount of under the hood chnages. Perhaps the shift to yearly upgrades wasn't such a good idea. Also, as a former developer I know that despite all the beta testing we did new totally unseen bugs didn't show up until the software was released into the wild.

Consider too, the adoption rate of Mavericks has been tremendous. In the past we'd have seen this number of people upgrading over the course of a month or more, not a week. This means lots more people reporting problems. Not only that but a slew of people aren't just upgrading from Mt Lion, we have a ton of people who are holdouts from Snow Leopard and Lion. So we have a different kind of mix very early in the game too with lots of older computers, older software being used with the new OS, and lots of people being surprised by how different Mavericks is because they haven't experienced the changes of Lion and/or Mt Lion.

It all adds up.

Oct 31, 2013 5:27 PM in response to dwb

I fully embrace the changes. It's the reliability of it that I am having issues with.... It's the continual Force Quitting and re-booting and all the things the "I" as a user, have grown up with from Apple working very well...

In response to your statement. I am running a brand new Retina MBP and a brand new iMac.. and it's all but an average experience (again, with reliablity). Funtion, has always been great with Apple and aside from a few things, they still have it, for the most part...

That's because it's basically an point update to Lion/MtnLion, but only for those not left behind by MtnLion. You know those ICBMs with underpowered graphics cards? IMO, not many of Mavericks features are useful, especially if one doesn't have any iOS devices or no use for cloudy stuff.
