Problem with java?

Ok.. first of all, you might want to spend $19.99 and upgrade to OS X 10.8.5.

Some sites aren't supporting 10.6.8 any longer. I won't suggest upgrading to

Mavericks because the forums are full of problems with it right now.

I had lots of trouble with Java after I upgraded to Safari 7.

The java test said I had it. My preferences said I had it, my version was the

most current and it was enabled in Safari but......when I needed it to run, like on

Pogo to play games, I'd be told I need to install Java or upgrade to the current

version. I'd read all the troubleshooting guides on everyone's websites and tried

everything-- multiple times. I probably re-installed Java 6 million times!

( Well... not really THAT many but it seemed like it!) I read forums everywhere.

Then, after wasting about 80 hours...... , yesterday, I finally found a posting for

how to get rid of Safari 7 and go back to Safari 6.0.5.

I did it and now NO MORE JAVA PROBLEMS!

I'm running OSX 10.8.5 on a MacBook Pro and using Java Version 7 Update 45.

I did have to re-install my OS but it took me back to Safari 6.0.5-- before the

upgrade to Safari 7--which worked just fine. I simply enable and un-enable Java

in the Safari preferences when I don't need it.

If you want to upgrade to OS X 10.8.5, follow only the Java instructions below.

Upgrading your OS doesn't take very long but you'll probably be better off

by uninstalling whatever Jave you have and downloading Java 7 Update 45.

If you want to keep your OS:

Back up your contacts, passwords and bookmarks- just to be safe. I didn't because

in my troubleshooting efforts, I'd reset Safari 7 and it wiped everything out.

However, everything I'd re-entered was still there after doing the following:

You have to hold down the "Command" and "R" keys while starting up your

computer with the start button.

A pop-up will ask you if you want to do a couple different things. I clicked on

(?re) install OS x 10.8.5.

It takes a long time.....be prepared. It took ALL day yesterday. I dont know if that's

normal, but someone where I found these instructions said it took a long time.

I just wasn't prepared for THAT long!

When it's finally finished uninstalling, downloading your OS and installing it, it will

automatically restart your computer.

When it finally finished doing its thing, I went to my "Library" folder to the

"Internet Plugins" folder to double check and see if I had Java. The JavePlugin I

had now was an "alias". Don't ask me how or why. ......I simply moved it to the

trash.

(Even if you have a real Java Plugin you might want to re-install fresh.)

**If re-installing Java, move your Plug-in to the trash by clicking on it and then the

"File" tab on your menu bar. Scroll down to click on "Move to trash".

**Then go to your System Preferences, (under the Apple icon on the menu bar),

the Security & Privacy Icon, Firewall tab and disable your firewall. If you have

other virus protection or malware software on your computer, disable it.

ie. I have MacKeeper. You have to sign-out to de-activate it.

** These are essential steps to get Java properly installed on your computer.

Once you've done those 3 things, you go to Java.com. Test for Java. You shouldn't

have it. So now, you can download it fresh. It'll automatically download the most

current version for your system. Follow Java's instructions to install it.

Ignore the pop-up Java page to test at this point.

After you've re-installed Java fresh. Quit Safari. Then restart Safari. Go into

Safari preferences, Security tab and enable Java. Now Java should be completley

enabled.

Now you need to go back to Java.com to test for it. It should be fine now.

You need to remember to re-enable your Firewall and virus protection once you've

confirmed your Java is working fine.

You may also need to reset some of your Safari and System Preferences since both

have just been installed. I ran through them to make sure everything was the way

I wanted it.

That's it. My Java problems are a thing of the past and I won't be upgrading to

Safari 7 again anytime soon.

I just got off phone with AppleCare about same issue. Here is how to fix:

How to reinstall Java for 10.6.8:

- Go to: /System/Library/Java/Support/CoreDeploy.bundle/Contents

- Move: javaAppletPlugin.plugin to the trash

- Run update --- Found at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573

- Reset safari

- Empty cache
