Q: Mac slow after installing Maverick

Hi,

as others are reporting, I've got a lot of lag on my Mac after installing Maverick.  I have to keep waiting for things to happen (it's like using my little Windows laptop!!).  Especially Chrome shows this behaviour and Mail.  When I switch to the application or open a tab it takes ages for it to render.  There seems to be a lot more (audible) harddrive activity.

I didn't know Macs were around in the 50's. And if you could just pop in evidence to Apple trolling these forums it would be helpful.

    Thanks

I dont expect them to mate.

If you read the majority of complaints here, they seem to be tied to common operating system problems.

In my case I have a MacBook Pro which is only two months old and not full of crapware etc. i use it for business and only use Apple approved, sponsored software.

It is an operating system problem (memory gobbling, hard disc accessing, system file stuff ups) which could have been and should have been tested before it was released.  Not everyone has 8gigs of memory and most of us have bog standard hardware supplied by Apple, one of the most controlled enviroments know to the computing world.  If they want to hold the reputation of a class product which works every time and doesnt require the time to prepare a full four course dinner for eight to boot up, then they have to be more careful with the product they promulgate.  Otherwise it is roll over Microsoft, I want to join you in the bed of stupidity.

That is what you said. I was born in the 50's. So if you used them before I was born you used them in the 50's (or 40's).

Apple have provided this site as a user forum. They have set rules for content. That is all. Have you ever seen a reply from them? A post by them? And if you feel differently, then why would you accuse someone of 'Trolling' their own thread (which you have no evidence of)? You need to word your posts more accurately and back up your statements with some shred of evidence if you are to accuse people.

    Yeah,

Those are some of the issues, but not all of these issues happen with every Mac out there.

i've got an 13' i7 - 8 gbRam, only used less than half of my 750 gb memory and it's slowing my mac to the point that it takes  5 ******* minutes to start and everytime i play a video it lags the sh*t out of it (sorry about the swears but i'm really ****** it's killing my mac and my work) and then the only update i get is something that i do not have a problem with Gmail WHY WOULD YOU UPDATE SOMETHING THAT IS USELESS AND NOT EVERYTHING ELSE? oh and the MAP App - Piece of Garbage - From all the GPS Companies you had to choose Google  1-it's not Accurate when you want a specific place, the maps are outdated the satelite images are just awfull I had to WALK 10 KM - YES 10 KM  - to find a school wich the map told me to and then find out that the school is on the oposite Direction  it is unacceptable - but there is more - the battery life time - Apple said that the OSX makes the 13' MacBook battery last for 12 hours- that's a straight up lie. YOU ARE BECOMING LIKE MICROSOFT Promisses of more effienciency for professional music/video editors - how can you work when after a video renders the whole program freezes for no reason at all a 5 second render froze my timeline and my editing viewer in Final cut when i export a project on Ableton 9 it crashes. I can see the reason you give this OS for free you know it is worthless why put up a price right?

Hecks, I was asked to replace the HDD. Still wondering whay upgrading to a newer OS would make the disk crawl.

It took me 2 days to backup the enitre 200Gb of data - had to leave the mac on for the entire time disable screensavers displays the work to get it done. Well ... the replace HDD seems to have solved it despite re-upgrading it to OS Maverick.

Can't say much but the thing works....

2 Days is not normal. If that was with your old HardDrive then that would things as it was dying.

Then that is good. What problems do you have now? May pay to start a new discussion to have them addressed.

I had the same multiple slowness problems. After various test etc, I discovered that (to solve MY problems) I emptied the old CACHES folders located at:-

For the entire mac operating system( i.e NOT user specific)

    /System/Library/Caches.

    /Library/Caches.

    and

for each user on your mac:-

    ~/Library/Caches.

Then empty the trash before rebooting,

and after rebooting emty the trash again (some 'Cache' files are locked when the system is up and running.

After the reboot my mac was back to its normal fast self.

Hope this helps at least some of you.

I had very similar problems when I upgraded my late 2009 MacBook from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. The Mail application and System Preferences especially took a long time to start up and when they did were very laggy, with a lot of disk activity and the computer seemed to be overheating a lot too. Browsing folder contents was also very slow.

In the hopes of fixing my MacBook I followed this guide here using Diskmaker X to perform a clean install of Mavericks: http://mashable.com/2013/10/23/clean-install-os-x-mavericks/

Since then my MacBook has been running fine with no lag. Mavericks seems to take a little longer than Mountain Lion to shut down and a bit longer once Finder has loaded before it's ready to use but once it's ready I find it pretty snappy.

To use DiskMaker X to create a Mavericks boot disk you'll need a spare external hard drive or USB stick of at least 8 GB capacity that you don't mind re-formatting. In addition to this you'll also need an external hard drive with enough space to back up all your files. I backed up my entire Home folder. After doing a clean install of Mavericks I dragged over all my Documents, iPhoto and Music Libraries, Movies folder etc. but only replaced a few non-Apple preference files in the Library folder. I then re-installed all my Applications using the proper installers and set all my System and Application preferences pretty much from scratch. I set up my e-mail accounts from scratch and re-downloaded all my e-mails. In total it took me around 5 hours though a lot of that time was waiting for things to install during which I was able to do other things. I also have around 40 GB extra HDD space even after I've re-installed everything which goes to show how much junk builds up in hidden areas on your disk.

I think most of the problems with Mavericks come from installing it over Mountain Lion, which in my case was itself installed on top of Lion which was installed on top of Snow Leopard. A clean install will always be preferable to the way that Apple wants you to upgrade.

    Hi,

I am having similar issues as well:

    - Spinning wheel of death appearing very often.

I have a mid 2013 Mac Air. Everything was OK beofre the instaltion of the Mavericks OS.

I have plenty of HD space, memory is quite fine. I am not using any heavy application, just the browser, but the systems still shows symptoms of being overloaded.

This is quite frustrating. I got this new computer just six months ago. It cost me a huge amount of money and it cannot even handle an OS update?!... Apple you should do something about this... You are going to loose clients...
