Users do not need to be distracted by garish animated icons that have absolutely no bearing on what they're doing.

You don't need to know about that any more than knowing when Spotlight is updating its index, when log files are being rotated, or any number of other mundane tasks. When TM performs a backup, it does it. If it can't, it tells you. Constantly monitoring one's Mac's maintenance tasks is unnecessary. No one cares about them, or should. When you're not using your Mac to do something productive or entertaining, walk away from it. Ignore it. That's how Macs are designed to work, and they work best when they're used in precisely that manner.

The incessant "Steve Jobs would never allow" refrain is not only stale, it's wrong. Steve Jobs didn't want users to be distracted with which programs are "running" and which are not. Mavericks has made that distinction completely irrelevant. He never had hard disk activity LEDs. He eliminated "power on" LEDs. He didn't even want an on/off switch on Macs. The non-animated TM icon is a welcome change consistent with every other Mavericks UI improvement, and consistent with the evolution of Macs since they were conceived.

They do not read these forum posts or even have AI to scan them for key points. Silly Apple! So everyone please send them a post about how slow your computer is behaving. I am very frustrated by this myself and have not found any answer to be satisfactory. My only guess is that something about Mavericks RAM management is faulty with older machines.

Why don't you post your issues with Mavericks in a new thread posting with an Etrecheck report so anyone that can help can see what is on your system that maybe causing all of your Mac ills?

I'd have to agree with you. Some users can get by with 4 GB, but for many it's just not enough.

Page-outs means it's spending a lot of time swapping RAM out to your hard drive since it isn't able to make room through compression and eliminating cache to load something it needs. That will slow things down every time.

Open Activity Monitor and click on the Memory tab. At the bottom of the dialog is a colored graph labled Memory Pressure. You want that to be green most, if not all of the time. If it's yellow, then it needs to be watched. If it turns red then you need more RAM.

Your Mac year and model can take up to  16 GBs of RAM, max..

Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

In addition to your RAM issues, completely uninstall MacFUSE per the instructions on the developer's website.

The developer has discontinued any support and updates for this app/plugin since the introduction of OS X 10.7 Lion.

Also, remove the MacFusion agent app in your startup/ Login items in your user accounts located in OS X System Preferences Panel.

Make sure all of your installed software is up to date with Mavericks compatible versions, too!

I'd just like to state as a closing comment to my slowing Mac problem, that it was resolved! I don't know exactly what did it but it felt more like a slow retuning of an engine. The only drastic thing I did, was to excise MacKeeper. Otherwise my Mac is the same and I can probably say with some conviction that its running faster than b4!

What caused it to just turn around and behave, I am not sure. But I have learned in my years with a Mac that you should not rush to fix stuff. Let the Mac work on the problem itself! Time and again the Mac has come thru. No I don't beleive in the supernatural but I believe in the robustness of the OS that clears its own issues because smart people have thought about this and have included <what if> subroutines lets say, that work on issues that might arise.

Anyhow, I've also noticed another detail: If on occassion one takes a damp cloth to clean the aluminum case, the Mac will thank you by becoming more sensitive to your desires. Removing invisible accumulating human residue from the touch pad renders it more sensitive to touch and the happy Mac responds more quickly! So all's well that ends well with my Mavericks scare.

I only wish I could use a utility that could safely clean my Mac the way MacKleener puports to do. Taking out the useless languages and accumulating junk files.... But we now have a much more serious problem to contend with: the SSL hole! Thank you all who helped me thru the crisis that is now but a mamory!

You certainly aren't the first user to have similarly benefitted by that solution.

I can assure you those don't amount to any significant savings and larger hard drives are so cheap these days that attempting to do that is not worth your time or money. Sorry you had to go through that.

This is the easiest way to fix "slow mac atfter upgrade to Maverick". I have tried it myseld and it has proved effective. In less that 10 minutes the issue is solved. Please give it a try:

1 – Start the mac holding ‘option’;

2 – Choose the recovery boot disc;

3 – Select Disc Utility option;

4 – Select the disc where os x is installed;

5 – Click ‘Repair disc permissions’ button;
6 – Wait till it’s done;
7 – Restart you mac in normal mode;
8 – Problem solved (At least for me and the guy that told me to do this).

My Mac Book has had similar problems to those listed here, slowness is sometimes annoying but the most anoying is computer freezing up-either working on something or in sleep mode and the only way to reboot it is by pushing power button. Sometimes this happens several times per day. I'm keeping everything backed up on Time Machine etc. Recently had Mavericks installed, had problems, a friend helped format the computer and reinstall it again but the freezing problem persists. Have around 38% free of hard drive space. Mac Book is a Pro, 15 inch but rather old:

Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

How do you know it's a "small percentage"? Perhaps there are millions more who don't post, but look up the solution provided by a user, apply it, and have nothing more to say.

Been using Apple products since the very beginning, ever OS release, everything from desktops to iMacs to laptops to iPads to iphones—you name it. I agree with the fellow above: there's a problem after installing Mavericks that did not exist with Mountain Lion. Nothing's changed but the OS.
