I have just been given an ipad which is series MC349LL so an old ipad, I want to update the software on the Ipad top ios7 but I cant seem to, there is no software update button in settings, can some one advise please.

That's a first-generation iPad, and iOS 5.1.1 is the last version of iOS it can run. If it's on iOS 4 still, connect your iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. You'll most likely be prompted to update. If not click the "check for update" button on the summary tab for the device in iTunes.
