"OS X Update Combined can't be installed ..." MBPro 8,3; 10.8.5

Normally, when things get too weird, I reinstall a Combo updater.

This is the first time I've seen this error:

"OS X Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."

(I did check here and I see a quite a few prior threads mentioning one or another Combo updater "can't be installed" going back several years --- none of those got a clear answer that I found).

Maybe someone knows; here's another.

Combo updater won't install on my 8,3 late 2011 17" Macbook Pro.

Original hard drive installed.

The MBP had, as it does from time to time, begun having more crashes more or less at random.

After checking for any other problems in the usual ways, normally, I'd reinstall the current Combo Update and it'd be ok.

Note: I am not ready to install Mavericks yet (Mail and Virtualbox issues in particular have been reported that put me off updating right away)

This past week, Finder crashed 8x in five days, and SystemUPServer crashed overnight, and other apps crash.

Disk Tools finds no problems.

I've looked for the obvious, as I've been updating software in preparation for Mavericks (but the crashes, and the problem I'm asking about, started before Mavericks came out).

Is it possible I've got something installed that's too new for the Combo updater to be allowed to operate?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1), actually 10.8.2

thanks; I already tried Recovery -- no problem doing that, but reinstalling didn't stop the crashes, and the message about being unable to install the Combo update continues.

No hardware problems detected.

Nothing unusual in the log file that I can see.

I'm hoping someone knows where this error message comes from and what it means.

I'm _guessing_ something that got updated recently is involved, but have no evidence.

Oct 31, 2013 11:18 AM in response to andyBall_uk

It comes from checks made when the installer loads the package, & means that installer thinks some aspect of those checks means that the volume is unsuitable.

It might be that a plist file or version string within one, is missing or altered so as not to be recognised, or that systemversion says it's a server; or most anything that is looked at.

The next time the a crash happens, note the date and time the problem occurred, then go to Applications/Utilities/Console and copy the log starting at the time of the crash. Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. Be selective about what you post and don’t post huge amounts. Make sure there is no personal data visible. Information learned from Linc Davis.

Nov 16, 2013 1:55 PM in response to Eric Root

OK, as requested, I waited for the next crash, copied the log, and here's an attempt to be selective, not post huge amounts, and post some part of the crash log. I confess I don't know what "selective" means to you; ask again and I will give more if you need more.

Or, did you mean this leading up to that crash?

(I see other mentions that "Segmentation fault 11" started happening to people recently associated with Mavericks -- as noted I haven't updated to Mavericks yet, but I had started updating software to prepare for that.

Somewhere in that process, after I started updating anything that would be needed with Mavericks, these crashes increased and I found I couldn't reinstall the Combo Updater for 10.8.5, which brought me to this question.

red herring I'm afraid -- no Google Drive here, no finder twiddles, same error with safe boot, same error booting from an external drive). The problem is this error message:

"OS X Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."

I can live with sporadic crashes -- doesn't everybody get those?

But what usually clears things up for a while is reinstalling the latest Combo update.

And I suddenly can't do that -- even with safe boot, even from other boot drives, my internal drive on the MBPro comes up "does not meet the requirements" -- just in the last week or so.

And I've installed Combo updates on this drive before. I'm sure I've installed one of the earlier 10.8.x Combos, within the last six months or so.

Now I can't.

(I'd be happy to chase Finder etc. crashes in another topic, but I do have the impression (and confirmation from the last time an Apple guy looked at it at the store) that it's not crashing more than the average, he said these things just happen)

Problem is, is there a way to reinstall the Combo update.

I can just surrender to Mavericks,

but

I'd rather know the current install was good before doing that system change to Mavericks.
