documents icon is missing

Methinks you mean Dock. If so, click on your house Dock icon, select OPTIONS->Show in Finder, and then drag the Documents icon to the Dock.

Or you could go the long way round: double-click the icon for your Hard Disk on your Desktop, then double-click 'Users' then your 'short name'. In that window find the Documents folder and drag it to the right-hand side of the Dock (i.e. to the right of the receding dotted line at extreme left of the picture above). This won't remove the Documents folder from the Home Folder, just place the icon in the Dock.
