Q: Recurring Kernel Panic

Hello,

I've been experiencing recurring kernel panics on my MAc Book Pro running on Snowleopard 6.8 over the last days. I already repaired permissions and did a disk reparation. Nothing helps, I just had another kernel panic.

Here is my panic report:

After reading through a couple of forums, I saw, that people usually cited the first lines of code after the line "loaded kexts" as the reason for the crash. So, in my case this could maybe be pace and LittleSnitch? I did read though that Pace is apparently needed for Adobe's products and if this true, there is no way, I can live without it (I am using CS6). My update to the CS6 was months ago and my kernel panics just started a couple of days ago. The only things I installed rather recently were a couple of plugins for AfterEffects... if ever this information could help to resolve the problem?

As to LittleSnitch, I have deleted this program a long time ago and I don't know, why he keeps on popping up in this list at all??? I just did a search for LittleSnitch on the system and was not able to find anything...

Any suggestions as to what could be the problem for the Kernel Panics?

FYI, I just went through the "official" uninstall program of LittleSnitch (apparently, there must have still been some stuff left on my computer)... But I don't really think, this was the problem anyway, because I had installed and unsinstalled this software ages ago...

Thank you Klaus for your quick reply, but I was somehow hoping for somebody to help me out with my error log. I have read through several of these posts already before posting my problem here, and most of it is rather Chinese to me, but I will have a close look again in the hope to find something.

While reading through other forum posts, I saw this software Etrecheck, which I installed and maybe, somebody will be able to help me out like this.... So, here is the info I received:

So, does the problem lie in some Launch Deamons and Agents?

    Problem System Launch Agents:

After reading another post about a similar problem, I had a look in these folders:

    /Library/LaunchAgents

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

    /Library/StartupItems

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

    ~/Library/LaunchDaemons

    ~/Library/StartupItems

And found some of these files in there. Can I go in and delete them? I don't really understand what they are for...

Any other things anybody can read out of this information?

Try updating the Little Snitch to the last version before 3. That is 2.5.4

    http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/legacy.html

If that doesn't help temporarily remove the Pace and LS, using the following and test. EDIT: Actually, I don't think LS will let itself be disabled this way, for security reasons. You'll have to uninstall it completely.

You needn't completely uninstall a program(s) suspected of creating these panics. This may not always work, but the worst that can happen is it will fail. Far better than completely uninstalling and reinstalling the full program, if it proves not to be the cause. Instead, you can temporarily disable a program. This may be especially useful when there are several suspects.

To temporarily disable/unload any .kext (kernel extension) which may be causing the problem, do the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste

    sudo kextunload

Important, leave a space after kextunload

Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.

This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.

    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/

Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.

This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.

Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Kernel Panics may be caused either by software or hardware. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

Also test to see if the KPs happen in Safe Boot: Shift at the startup chime.

If they don't happen there, it's most likely a third party extension causing the KPs, since Safe Boot disables those.

Thank you very much for your reply WZZZ!

I had a look at the extensions folder and found the PaceSupportFamily.kext file, but when running the suggested command line in terminal, I had the following message:

(kernel) Kext com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.master not found for unload request.

Failed to unload com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.master - (libkern/kext) not found.

So, does this mean, it is actually not loaded and (therefor) not needed?

As to LittleSnitch, I had already deleted the software years ago, but apparently, there were still some remains of it, that should be gone now, at least, that's what I hope.

Do you know in how far I need to be concerned about these failed Launch agents?

I never installed any additional RAM, so it's all the native RAM that came shipped with the computer...  I also freed some more disk space, in case this was causing the issue.

I will do some further research on my problem and will see, how my computer performs tomorrow... (crossing fingers I somehow already solved the problem)

So far, thanks again for your time!

According to your crashlog, you do have Little Snitch installed and versions prior to 2.4 were not compatible with Snow Leopard. You have 2.2.05 and that's a good reason for recurring kernel panics.

Apparently you didn't remove correctly LS (did you restart after running the uninstaller?). Anyway, here you find detailed instructions:

Refer to How can I uninstall Little Snitch? > Little Snitch 2

    Hi Yeehat,

    Thank you for your reply.

I went through these steps just after the crash (hence my message number 2) and I did use the official uninstaller with remove user preferences checked and I did restart right afterwards. So, if this was the problem, it should be solved now?!

In the meantime (after reading some more helps forums and the etrecheck info) I moved this PaceSupportFamily.kext file to my desktop... So far, it does not seem to cause any issues, but the thing is, I can not even put it back, if I wanted to. When putting it back, I receive a message, that it has not been installed correctly... But since this is a third party app (as far as I understand), worst thing that can happen is, I have to reinstall the software that needs it, I guess?

I think, I will wait and see, how things are going tomorrow. Maybe LittleSnitch was the only program causing problems. I will keep you posted!

Thank you for all your quick replies and help!

Did you try a Safe Boot? As I said, if the KPs stop there then it's probably some third party program or item causing them.

Not sure why you got that message back for unloading the Pace. Go into the Extensions folder and unload anything you see Pace.

Don't think this would be causing the KPs, but definitely get rid of the CleanMyMac. It's junk and it isn't needed.

You should also check for problematic RAM by running Rember at least twice.

    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/

Don't be too concerned about the Etrecheck report for various "problems." And don't start removing any Launch Agents and Daemons.

I just write to give you some update about my situation. After doing  a second disc repair yesterday before turning the computer off over night, everything seems alright now. My computer was running all day on several programs and I had no Kernel Panic appear. So, I hope, my problem was solved.

Big thank you again to all the people responding, it was a great learning experience!

PS: @ WZZZ: I did also do a rember test and everything seems to be fine with my RAM. Thank you for the tip! Oh, and no I won't delete any Launch Agents
