Keynote prevent auto overwrite of saved copy of a document

Keynote has developed an annoying nuisance behavior. Whenever I edit a document, the saved copy is automatically overwritten. As a result, many of my existing Keynote presentations are now corrupted, as I inadvertently changed things without realizing they would overwrite the saved copy.

How can we make this weird behavior stop???
