Continual mds Process on External HDs

After upgrading to Mavericks, and after upgrading iPhoto and Aperture, I'm seeing a continual read/write to a 1 Tb LaCie Firewire 800 HD that I use for my Aperture library (which is about 700Gb in size). I utilize a 4 Tb Seagate (usb-3) as a vault for Aperture. The Seagate is also being accessed several times per second, it appears.

The Console message that is constantly repeating is:

The field "resident: xxxx swapped" continues to change (xxx seems to increase as a 4-digit number) as console updates.

Terminal shows mds_stores and mds running (10% and 6% respectively) in the background...

I'm not sure if this is a "normal" process after upgrading the Aperture library (I don't recall it happening during previous upgrades), or if there is something amiss... The Spotlight icon does not show the "dot" so I don't believe Spotlight is trying to index these drives...

Thanks for your thoughts!
