How to setup Canon Selphy CP900 printer over WiFi in Mavericks?

Hi,

After upgrade to Mavericks I can't install my Canon Selphy CP900 printer.

I simply wanted to print over WiFi network.

How could I do that?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Redogg, a heartfelt thanks for doing what Canon is apparently unable or unwilling to do.

I find the whole thing a bit shocking - I just bought this printer yesterday at Best Buy. I'm now wondering if Canon will continue to make the paper and ink packs. If they don't, I am the proud owner of a $100 brick. Which is exactly what I just said to Canon. I completely encourage everyone else here to do the same at http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/form_display/sup_by_email.

Dear Canon

I have just purchased a Selphy and was distressed to discover that you do not support the latest OS X operating system by providing drivers and software compatible with it. Having checked on the Apple discussions board, I was relieved to find that another Apple user had posted a link to a driver (your driver actually with the version check overridden) which I was able to use to get the printer working. And another Apple user had posted an excerpt from an email from yourselves in which you stated that the Selphy is a "seasoned product" and that you will no longer be supporting it with software version updates. It seems that one of your customers was able to fix the problem for Apple users in under 15 minutes, so why has Canon not done so?

As the product has only been on the market for 18 months, and remains for sale in all retailers as a full-price item, I'm a bit shocked that Canon would wash their hands of the product and refuse to support it.

I am further concerned as to whether this means that I will not be able to purchase the proprietary supplies required to run this machine.

Essentially, I'm now regretting my purchase of this Canon product and looking to take it back to the store. At $100 this is a major purchase on my budget, and I am wondering if I have been fooled into buying a $100 brick by Canon.

Can you please provide further information on (a) software support and whether you are discontinuing it, and (b) the proprietary supplies and if you are discontinuing them.

Best regards

Sorry to hear!

Are you on Mavericks? The instructions were for the latest operating system.

Although before I found this thread I was hard pressed to find anything to help me install the driver on old IOS. I love the printer but am too frustrated with Canon.

I wish you luck. Not sure how I can help because I was clueless until I found this thread and it worked beautifully for me.

Good luck & I hope someone can help you.

I received a reply from Canon and it seems like they are now changing tacks with reference to their Selphy.

"The Selphy CP900 differs from our other printers in that it is designed to be used as a standalone model and not with a computer. It is for this reason that Canon has decided not to update the printer for use with other models. As you noted the printer is still relatively new so ink and other supplies will continue to be sold. You would not find this limitation in our other printer models as they are designed to be used with a computer."

This is of course ridiculous as one side of the box is covered with information about what computer systems it's compatible with.

Thank you for posting thieir reply

What Corporate BS!

Where on the box or in the literature did it identify the printer as a "standalone"

Now I am sufficiently annoyed to write to Canon the following:

Please provide the exact problem description

Your refusal to provide the simplest of driver upgrades for Mavericks operating system defines your total contempt for your customers, and I now reciprocate that contempt. The entire Apple community hates Canon and will try to never buy your products. Our own Apple community's RedDogg has provided us all with the fax because he is a good human being and you are not

In reality, this is just an exercise in blowing off steam, because while Canon *****, so does HP

Redogg yor solution woked like a champ. I have a two week old grandaughter and I have a lot of printing to do. Prior to downloading your modified driver I dragged the Canon application library to the trash.

Now the only problem I have that is somehat related, Apple in it's infinite wisdom elected to remove some of the formating options in iPhoto 9.5.1 (the Mavericks version). And now I have to fall back to a Mt. Lion laptop when I need these features.

Unless I can figure a way to run the earlier full featured iPhoto version 9.4.2 under Mavericks.

Hi,

I got a different response from Canon support here in Norway. I got the reply in swedish and I have translated it and asked for permission to distribute the response. Here is the reply (translated with the help of google translate):

-----google translate with some error correction below----

Hi Øyvin Eikeland ,

Thanks for contacting Canon Support !

No, this is not true. We have received information that the driver for Mac OS X 10.9 will be released for the products CP900 , CP810 and CP800 as they had been on the market for such a short time. However, I have no information on when the drivers are released , but you will be under Support & Downloads for each product on the Canon website .

It is very true that with each release of new operating systems , we here at support receive many complaints due to lack of drivers . Now it was 2.5 months since Mac released the Mavericks and Windows 8.1, which means that Canon are working hard now to create new drivers for as many products as possible and we are here to support work with customer satisfaction.

Poor information means that many do not know that devices may be incompatible, either because of excessive cost , lack of demand , or in the older SELPHY product cases - due to technical differences that SELPHY printer from some years back , you can not create drivers for the newer operating systems.

Canon respect the client's right to update their computers , but wish that you should be mindful of the effects it can have on one's applications and devices . Personally, I prefer to be a few years behind in updating the operating system just because of this problem . Both you and I are Mac users , and for us regarding problems with demand even more when fewer people have Macs and demand for new drivers or similar automatically becomes lower.

I hope you understand , and wish you great photos with your CP900 !

Sincerely,

T. Christoffersson

----end of message---

I must say I am very pleased with the feedback from Canon support here in Norway. Redogg will save my *** in the short run and Canon will hopefully step up and deliver drivers pretty soon (as T Christoffersson promised in his mail.)

This is interesting

Here is the reply I received from Canon in the US

Thank you for contacting Canon product support in regards to your SELPHY CP900 and your Mac.

Unfortunately, our SELPHY CP900 series printers are not compatible with the Mavericks operating system. The printers are only compatible with OS 10.8 and earlier.

If a computer with an earlier version of Windows or Mac OSX is not available, please print using a memory card or PictBridge compatible camera. I apologize for this inconvenience.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Michael
Technical Support Representative

As you all can see, Michael ignored my question and parrotted Canon's "too bad" answer

I hope your Norway people are the ones who are correct
