Nov 2, 2013 8:58 AM in response to liam587by sheila_m.,Hello Liam,
It sounds like you are not seeing the AirPlay mirroring icon on your MacBook Pro after upgrading to Mavericks. I found an article with steps you can take when you do not see the AirPlay icon. I recommend reviewing the full article and specifically steps in the section titled "Troubleshooting AirPlay Mirroring:"
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Best,
Sheila M.

Nov 18, 2013 6:10 PM in response to sheila_m.by SpencerIsaacson,I don't think this answered liam587's question. I have the same issue.
Previously, I could use airplay to stream audio from safari to my denon receiver. I could do this from iTunes as well as any other program that produced sound. I could not stream video as the receiver does not handle it. After the latest software update from Apple, I no longer have this capability. Something that worked perfectly fine no longer works.
Similarly, after updating my ipad mini to the latest OS update, I can no longer stream youtube audio to the device and can only stream content from the "music" app to the receiver. Previously, I could send any audio content to the receiver including sounds from pandora and other music apps. Now, I cannot do that and it is an issue for me. I don't want to have to buy and Apple TV device to plug into a device that already supports audio streaming.

Nov 19, 2013 1:40 AM in response to liam587by mylitesite,I am totally DISGUSTED! I have just updated my 1 year old MacBook Pro to the new OSX. I have an IPAD3, Iphone 4s and a Apple TV. I find utterley OFFENSIVE that content I have PURCHASED FROM APPLE can no longer be AirPlayed from my MacBook to my Apple TV. I have speant THOUSANDS of dollars on Apple Equipment, only purchase PAID CONTENT FROM ITUNES and you now stop me from watching my content how I want to. What BIZZARE reason would you possible have to prevent this. I OWN ALL OF MY APPLE EQUIPMENT AND THE CONTENT I BUY FROM YOU. NOW YOU WANT TO CONTROL HOW I CAN VIEW IT IN MY OWN HOME. I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANGRY WITH THIS WHOLE SITUATION. WAKE UP BEFORE YOU LOOSE MARKET SHARE. DON'T ENGOURAGE PEOPLE TO BUY YOUR PRODUCTS AND THEN CONTROL HOW WE USE THEM.ARRRRRGGGGHHH SO ANGRY.

Take a chill pill. This is user-2-user forum. If you want to express yourself then use apple.com/feedback.
But before you do that turn off and turn on your 3rd party router. Mavericks didn't change anything if comes down to airplay and airplay mirroring. It olny improve functionality by adding option to use Apple TV as an additonal screen.

A major function of my computer has now been disabled - not because the MBP cannot run it (as proven by Mountain Lion and current iTunes functionality) which is now, in my opinion, rendering the 3 year old computer 'not fit for purpose'!!
I can't even stream the BBC iPlayer from safari onto my v3 Apple TV!!!
(one of many things I could do with OS Mountain Lion)
Apple, please rectify this quickly.
MBP 2010 its not compatible with Airplay Mirroring (Airplay and Airplay Mirroring it's not the same)- see here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404
To have this functionality on your MBP and Mountain Lion you will need to use 3rd party app like Airparrot or other similar app. Check which app is it and check if there is a newer version.
Or, if you have this app alredy, then cycle power on you router. Very often problem is with networking settings.

Dec 19, 2013 1:38 AM in response to liam587by london_mbp,I FIXED IT! See answer below.
PROBLEM: Airplay worked for a little while, and as others in this forum it then NEVER worked again. I couldn't see the Airplay icon, meaning my devices (laptop, iPhone and iPad) thought there was no Apple TV on the network.
WHAT I DID: I tried all the options in the previous posts, and none of them worked.
WHAT FINALLY FIXED IT:
I went to my router's admin page, and I changed the security settings from "WPA & WPA2" to "WPA" only.
Problem solved! Not only did my Airplay start working right away, but also other issues I was experiencing with Airprint were solved as well. So anything that relies on Bonjour services for syncing was fixed thanks to this small change in my router's settings.
I hope this helps others as well.MY SET UP:
- MacBook Pro (15in retina 2013 - the new one)
- Mac OSX Mavericks (latest version fully up to date)
- Apple TV latest generation, fully up to date
- iPhone 5s
- iPad Air
- Internet connection: BT Total Broadband
- Home network router: BT HomeHub 3 (latest firmware fully up to date)
