Q: After installing Mavericks my dvd player quit working

Thanks. This solved my problem. I did the suggested System Management restart and that got things working so I never got around to trying "closing display" trick. Thanks for the tip.

Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM also worked perfectly for me. GOTO: @baltwo's comment (second one on the post). I'm on a mid-2009 13" Macbook Pro. I actually upgraded initially to Mavericks from Snow Leopard without any issues with the SuperDrive, but the older hdd couldn't seem to handle Mavericks. I installed a new 7200rmp 1TB 32MB cache drive and used a usb install drive to run a clean install of Mavericks on it along with the latest TimeMachine backup. My mac was running like it was new, and then I realized the SuperDrive was 'dead'.

Make sure after you shutdown, hit the power button and then immediately hold Command (⌘), Option, P, and R and don't release until you hear the startup theme. The mac will almost appear to be shutting down again and then the SUperDrive should wake up.

As a side note - I had a new SuperDrive, anti-static mat/bracelet and spudger tool in my Amazon cart and decided to do one more internet search to fix it. I thank the internet gods for website discussion boards! DO NOT CLICK "PLACE ORDER"! DO NOT drive to the Apple store. Your drive most likely still works!

This is exactly my issue... I upgraded my OS X initially and maintained functionality of my internal Superdrive but after a Boot Camp Windows 7 install gone terribly wrong, I had to completely wipe my computer and do a clean Mavericks install... unfortunately knocking out my disc drive's functionality... frustrating, too because I had used it less than 2 hours earlier when my laptop was (albeit unsuccessfully) installing Windows 7.

That being said, I was so so so hoping your advice would work for me & it doesn't appear to have solved anything. I noticed your comment is fairly recent... only a few months ago. Has the issue returned? Any other pointers?

I have the same issue with my drive won't completely put a disc in and eject functions and other ideas above don't work. This is just after installing Windows 8 on the bootcamp partition. I am running Mavericks OS X 10.9.5 on a 21.5-inch, Mid 2010 iMac. The original issue I had loading Windows 8 from the XP version that was on it was that the boot camp drive wouldn't show up on the mac side and the win side wouldn't show the mac side drive. Also it wants to start windows automatically so I have to hold option at restart in order to show my drives in order to run from the side I would like.

My solution is going to be uninstalling bootcamp and do a refresh on the computer with all data in order to see if my drive will work again. I don't use the windows side enough as my scanner is now obsolete with windows 8, and my husband has a laptop if I needed it.

As I search for a solution to this question, I repeatedly see your response with these links. I should say useless links. What do you do? Just go through all the questions for this and reply with those? They've been proven to not fix this issue. Get a life.

I did NOT  have a problem with my dvd player (assumingly the superdrive). But I did have a new superdrive installed as my dvd player stopped working after almost 5 years. So I just wonder how old some of your dvd players are? Sounds like from the posts here that DVD failure  did have something to do with the new system. I am these days almost afraid to upgrade when a new system suddenly is announced. Never know what is or isn't going to work after upgrades to the system. I waited a long time before I installed mavericks. I don't even know if the next one soon to come out will be able to work in my older mac. I have my fingers crossed that it will or else I'll have to stay where I am now.

Mavericks fried my DVD-drive as well, or so I thought for the last year or so...

Until I stumbled on this thread:

what is com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.lockfile?

It made me curious, because when looking into my Prefs, I didn't have that file...So, I googled "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.lockfile" and was able to download a file (this is at your own risk). Copied it to my Prefs and voilá; my DVD-drive is alive and working.

Wish I had gotten this info from Apple and not by trial and error/DIY...

hey I'm on maverick OSX and read that lion creates .plist.lockfiles

in my preference folder i don't have any lockfiles, so I'm assuming downloading a "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.lockfile" file and copying it to the pref folder is something that shouldn't even be there to begin with

what OSX are you running

also can you send me a link to a "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.lockfile" file that i could download and try if it makes a difference, even your copy,

(if you delete/move it out of pref folder and insert a dvd will it create a new plist file and lock file along with it, thus creating a newer/fresher copy without too much of your info inside it would be better to send)

Resetting smc surely didn't work for me, back in the day...

Was running latest Mavericks when performing "my hack", now running latest Yosemite. All is dandy.

BTW I only put the file in HD>library>preferences, not under usr.

Like many others I have tried ways to try and fix this issue.

Could you please tell me where I can find a copy of the "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.lockfile" file. My searches have proved fruitless thus far.

Hoping your fix will work for me also.
