the home button and lock button on my iphone 4 aren't working? can't turn phone off and can't access settings to turn assistive touch on?? please help!

so the home and lock buttons on my iphone 4 arent working? i can physically press them but nothing happens when i do. i cant access the home screen to go to settings and turn assistive touch on. the only way i can get to other things is from the notification bar,or when i swipe up to get the bar which has music, airplane mode, wifi, bluetooth, torch, clock, calculator, camera etc.. i am currently updating it on itunes, havent tried restoring it yet. does anybody have some good suggestions??
