After install, iTunes does not open at all.

I installed Mavericks on my 2011 Macbook Pro the other day. Everything went well and everything seems to be working normally except iTunes.

When I click on it in the dock, the icon bounces a few times, or just once, but then nothing else happens. It never opens. Same thing when I click on it directly from the applications folder.

Any ideas?

Remove VirusBarrier from your Mac.

Uninstalling Intego VirusBarrier from Mac OS X | OIT Website

Then restart your Mac and try iTunes.

Gagekeeper prevents malware on your Mac.

Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.

Make sure either Mac App Store or Mac App Store and identified developers is selected. If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.

Open /Applications/Utilities/Console look at the 'All messages' section, try opening iTunes & see what shows up. Copy the output here if it is gibberish, someone may understand it 🙂

Perian is quite old now, I don't know if it has issues but I'd be tempted to move it from the prefpanes folder (either

/Library/PreferencePanes/ or ~/Library/PreferencePanes/ put it on the Desktop to so you can move it back if you need it later.

I would definitely read the threads on CleanMyMac… (I've read bad things).

You also appear to have 3 different flashplayer plugins? Take a look inside the Internet plugins folders too, then open the Flash prefs & ensure that us current.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

I looked in User Diagnostic Reports and there is absolutely nothing there, even after I try to open iTunes several times.

Two other things that might be helpful to diagnose this issue are that when I try to start iTunes from the applications folder, the folder very briefly flashes white and then nothing else happens. The other thing that might be odd is that I don't seem to have a Library folder in my home directory. Before updating to Mavericks I did have one.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I did all of those tests and still, no iTunes.

I'm not sure if this info is related to the problem, but before doing these most recent tests, I noticed this series of additional error messages in console after trying to open iTunes:

11/1/13 11:40:10.274 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[144]: (com.apple.iTunes.40336[289]) Exited with code: 1

11/1/13 11:40:17.178 AM CVMCompiler[292]: sandbox cache error 11: database disk image is malformed

11/1/13 11:40:21.413 AM Console[293]: setPresentationOptions called with NSApplicationPresentationFullScreen when there is no visible fullscreen window; this call will be ignored.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

After install, iTunes does not open at all.
