Q: OSX Mavericks Keeps Restarting at Random Times

Update to the story.  I went to the South Coast Apple store here in Southern California.  I was told that my device was out of warranty (which is correct), but they gave me 1/2 off the depot repair price.  So $155 for new logic board installed.  Estimated time 3-5 days.  I'll take it . . . .

Just read through this thread.  My MBP (Late 2013) is restarting several times a day as well.  I posted a couple weeks ago and was told it was likely 3rd party software conflicting.  I removed software I wasn't using, and it worked fine for a few days.  It is back to restarting again.  I see on several of these posts that the issues have been with older models and Mavericks.  But, with this being a new machine, could it be an issue with the OS? 

It could be software or hardware if you migrated & brought over older software.

This thread seems to have collected a lot of info on the same model, so lets see if it can be kept that way.

I'd recommend making your own thread and then others can advise you on how to look at logs to try to see what could be causing it.

Just chiming in that I have the same issue happening with mine. Going to take it in to Apple store next week... I'll update when I do.

i have a 15' macbook pro 2010 model with core i5 and since i updated to mavericks i keep having the same problem described above...random crashes out of nowhere and immediate restarts...i ve read above that the gpu is defective and needs to be replaced but i have a question...i ve been running snow leopard with no restart issues for three years in a row...how come the gpu is NOW defective after the OS upgrade???

@santzowind, this was exactly my experience as well.  Has been running flawlessly and through multiple updates.  I also use it in the identical fashion each day, same keyboard, external monitor etc.  The day I installed Mavericks, it started rebooting intermittently.  Usually it was about once a day.  I created a new profile, deleted apps and then finally rebooted and re-installed Mavericks.  Same problem.  I did not try reverting to SL because it seemed painful.

So, all that being said, I witnessed my MacBook fail the video test in the Store.  So I believe it truly did have an issue, something about Mavericks makes it worse I guess. 

Since there are no apple stores in my country and i wouldn't want to take it to the authorized service provider is there a way to do the repair at home? i mean can i just switch the graphic card with a new one ????

after doing some reading at the forum i understand that the answer to my prior question is "no".....

I'm afraid the situation hasn't changed. You still need to contact Apple or an Authorized service provider & ask them to see if it can have the GPU fixed.

The only other option you have is to revert to an earlier OS (whatever worked before) & simply hope the issue doesn't re-appear.

New OS's use new features & updated drivers that put loads on parts that were previously not under heavy load. Sadly it means the Mac can appear to develop issues, when they have always existed.

Sorry, we can't help you with this, it's clear that this model has issues that need resolving by someone who can replace the GPU (which probably means replacing the entire logic board too).

I am also having this problem - also a mid-2010 Macbook Pro...

I've never had any problems with Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion but something in Mavericks seems to trigger it.

My 3 years was up in October so fingers they can do something. I do find it unbelievalbe that Apple can sell a faulty product and then put some arbitary time limit on how long they are willing to correct it.

As soon as an issue was identified they should have contacted ALL the customers who purchased this model and got them to run a test... the company has really started letting itself down recently.

I agree with you and used this point to help secure my 50% discount.  My warranty was up in April, so maybe you're better off with October.  Also, if you had Apple Care on it, that seemed to make a difference to the Store Manager in my case.

By the way, the repair was done in two working days and I have not had an issue since.  The also replaced the two sticks of RAM free of charge.

Hey I have a Mac that was gifted to me a while back.  Not sure exactly what year it's from any more although I believe it is from 2009 or 2010.  It's 13 Inch.  I am having the same random restart problems that others are having after having installed Mavericks.  It's VERY cumbersome when I'm working on something important and have tons of things open.

I have tried uninstalling 3rd party applications.  I have tried re-installing the OS, but still no luck at all.

Can you please guide me accordingly as to what I should do to fix it?  Thank you in advance!

Hello all. The problem causing all these issues is the internet plug-in SILVERLIGHT. The one you need to watch Netflix with. I too went to the Genius bar and they had no clue. They advised me to wipe my Mac and reinstall Mavericks without all my apps- installing them one at a time until my Mac starts to crash again. Sure enough, as soom as I reinstalled Silverlight, my Mac went to sh*t. Got rid of it, and my issues went with it. Now, I still think Mavericks has issues with video in full screen mode because it has crashed on me once or twice since removing Silverlight, but not two or three times DAILY like it was with Silverlight in there.

So yeah, I can't watch Netflix on my Mac, but I have other devices for that until Apple finds a fix.
