For me, the issue was a known problem with the Nvidia card on the MacBookPro6,2.  Replaced by Apple store, works like a charm now.

The root cause was a bad video card, the trigger seems to be Mavericks and perhaps other programs that use the graphics card heavily, like Silverlight.

You are seeing a different type of panic, the other users here are seeing GPU panics, yours is the CPU.

It will be a good idea to create your own thread if you want help via this forum, otherwise back it up & see what the store says.

Thank you guys, I will start a new thread as my problem seems to be CPU vs GPU related.  I am not really sure how to get this replaced, as I don't think I can accord paying for it be changed currently.  And I'm not sure how the Apple store will address it.

That type of panic (type 14 page fault) indicates the system is trying to access an invalid memory address and if third party drivers are not involved, it is most likely a bad RAM module. Try removing one bank at a time and test.

  • Drew Reece Level 5 Level 5 (5,545 points)

nbar is right it may not be a hardware issue, but since we don't know what else is installed it could be any of the items in the panic log.

Post a new thread & include an EtreCheck reports with the most recent panic log.

It will also be worth checking these two items are up to date since they are mentioned in the report…

You have dubious apps loading at the system level (CleanMyMac, Techtool Pro, Wiresharks capture tool, Blackberry drivers, Avast…)

Have you made sure all of it is up to date, is it 10.9 compatible? Mac OS doesn't need utilities that 'clean' or 'protect' parts of the system, they simply add to the amount of work the OS has to do.

Go and read the threads about CleanMyMac - it could be making your Mac perform worse. Also update or remove all the third party software that is loading into the system (they are listed in Startup Items, Kernel Extensions, Launch Agents, Launch Daemons).

User Launch Agents and User Login Items can also affect the user account performance. Create a new account to see if these are part of your problems.

It would be easiest if you backed up & reinstalled without adding the extra software that you don't need.

I wonder if that is the problem i'm having to.  I installed mavericks a couple days ago and it has crashed probably 4 or 5 times already (1 time i had aperture open, the other 3 or 4 times i had iMovie open). Not sure if this has an impact but I have also had two external hard drives connected every time:

Incidentally, I am currently trying to re-create the problem, I have aperture playing a slideshow that has photos and video and have iMovie playing a video.  Been about 3 minutes and no crash so far.  (I did remove the external hard drives to see if that made a difference for some reason).  Hoping my graphics card/processor isn't defective...

You GPU is  most likely damaged, in which case you will need a new logicboard, unfortunately. The replacement program may still be in effect

Uninstall the software associated with the driver below to rule out third party kernel extensions as the cause:

    Thanks nbar.

What is weird is I just tried an experiment where I had the following playing:

    1) picture/video slideshow in aperture

    2) mp4 in quicktime

    3) video in iMovie

    4) netflix in chrome (using silverlight)

    5) session in garage band

ALL of which use enhanced graphics.  And NO crash after probably 20-30 minutes of playing these in various combinations together.

I don't think I can uninstall sophos (work requires it).  I'm not sure what the paceap is, I'll try and figure it out.

If the GPU was damages, wouldn't it be likely that playing all that stuff at once would crash it?

    Thanks!

Welcome. Some kernel panics can be recreated, some are sporatic and intermittment. The report itself indicates your GPU is damaged, however. If that is the case, the panics will occur more often and eventually your CPU won't be bootable other than in safe mode.

You have the same model number as I and many in this thread have and are experiencing the same problem (random reboots).  I don't think trying to overload the GPU is going to get you very far.

Just take it to the Apple Store and have them run the test for this condition.

They replaced my logic board for half-price and I have not has a single issue since.

The trouble is that your model is in the range of devices with a known GPU issue (it may not have the fault, an Apple store should be able to evaluate that). The longer you try to test & duplicate the issue the less likly it becomes that Apple will offer discounts on a repair.

The fault may appear when a certain temperature is reached, or another seemingly random set of conditions.

Pace is used for software licensing/ anti-piracy. Be careful about removing it. I have been unable to find a list of apps that use this system, so it may be easier to make a test clean installation to see if the issues reappear when 10.9 is in it's default state.

I have seen others remove Sophos (along with other system level apps) & they hve seen improvements in performance. If you must have it installed ensure it is the latest version (& is compatible with 10.9).
