Strange problem when copying files to NAS

Hello all. I have a strange problem when trying to copy files from my intel iMac to my Seagate NAS. I am copying files from my HD and when the file is nearly copyied i get an error message saying that the file can't be copied because it is already in use by another application. Well... it surely isn't. I try copying them by ftp (Filezilla) and everything works fine. I can then access them through my media server but !!!! NOT THROUGH MY iMac!!!! It is like the files are not there!!!! But they definetely are! I tried fixing the disk permissions, rebooting NAS, iMac etc but nothing seems to solve the problem. Is there any suggestion of what might be wrong? I am under Mavericks and i am pretty sure that the problem started after the update. When copying from my external USB hard drive to my iMac HD everything works fine. The problem is from my iMac to my NAS.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I've had this happen a few times too, but not anymore; I suspect it's a Finder quirk. Try these two things and preferably when doing so, use a file that consistently gives the problem:

1. Try unix copy and move commands from terminal, eg

cp <local file path> /Volumes/<NAS share>/<folder path> Try the same for mv (move) - both of these should not give such an error.

2. In Finder, with list vew and no preview, locate the file in the right pane. Make sure you DO NOT select it; if the file name line is all blue, click once on something else to remove the solid highlight of that line. Access the context menu of the file by right-click (two-finger trackpad push or however you do right-click equivalent on your hardware). When you get the context menu this way, you'll see that the file line is bordered in blue, not solid-highlighted. Choose the copy and then paste (or move) using the same idea (without solid-highlighting) in the destination folder. If you don't get the context menu when trying to paste/move into the destination folder, double-click the folder to enter it and use either empty space in the right pane to get the context menu or use the "gear" button on the menu to do the paste/move.

Maybe worth a shot for you as I don't have the problem with Finder anymore using it this way

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It's very much appreciated.

I missed one important piece of info from my problem and that's that I'm trying to copy multiple files ( about 1500 ) so it'd be nigh on impossible to do them one at a time 😢

I have managed to copy a couple of files that were likely candidates for causing the trouble trouble, by using your second suggestion, but it's not the file that's the issue, as the next file in the list did the same thing, when I tried to include it in a mulitple copy.

Like you say, it looks to be a Finder 'bug' and one that is making me reach for the ML install disc 😟

Well, I originally had my Lacie 2Big Network 2 NAS providing its shares via SMB but I didn't like how the Mac created its resource forks as separate files (all those "._" files). By the way, I believe that if the NAS is only providing SMB V1, then that is what the Mac (without any additional configuration) will use after negotiation, because that's all the NAS has in that instance. So I changed the NAS to share via AFP. If memory serves correctly, I had the "cannot finish" issue on both sharing protocols.

Hi all,

this isn't just a NAS problem, I'm getting it on two macs with Mavericks trying to copy over large video files, then if I can get it to copy people with older systems (10.7) get the problem when they try to copy my files to their system.

It seems more likley to happen with larger files, I know it's not a NAS problem as I don't use them, there might even be a relationship between this problem and the "USB unmounting after sleep" problem, which means it's more than possible it's a finder problem.

I am also have the same problem mentioned in this thread here. Very frustrating. I removed the show icon preview but continue to have issue. I do think this is getting close though. I feel as if something on the os level is reading the file as it is being copied and causes the file not to transfer. I can turn right around and transfer the file to a HD on the same Mac with no problems. Only when I try to transfer to NAS OR another machine on the network. Currently transfering via smb. Sometimes the move to another folder on local machine and then transfer to NAS works but what a pain.

If I use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the same files, it works just fine. It is only when using Finder that it fails. Unfortunately Carbon Copy is not a simple solution.

I don't think it has anything to do with multiple files. I am having the same issue. When I quit out of every application the message does go away. My mac is a clean install of Mavericks with no real modifications. Just the normal nessessary apps installed like Adobe, etc. But for me it is also happening when copying to a NAS.

The most annoying thing about it for me though is that it doesn't fail and pop the message up until AFTER it's already done all the work of copying the file. It's not like it tells me straight away. My files are multiple gigs, so that's several minutes of waiting before finding out.

And with multiple files beign copied at the same time, when it hits that error it stops, so onlyt the files up to that one copy successfully and the rest don't.

Even if the file is open somewhere it should still copy. I can't figure it out. I can't MAKE it happen with a test file. These are files that I did just have open and did just modify. But even if I close out of the app first sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. But it's usually only one file at a time that will do it. Like FINDER is what has it open for some reason.

I finally figured out a solution. My NAS shares both SMB and AFP. I had to force all my shares from NAS on my Mac to mount AFP. This was a pain to do but I have not seen the issue since all of my shares are now afp.

I did this using the Go menu, Connect to server, and the afp://your nas ip here/ Once the Nas was mounted I dragged the folders to my finder side bar. I then went to users under system preferences to create a auto mount. Under my user account I selected the login items. From there I clicked on the + and added each folder on the Nas. Luckily I only have four root folders. When I reboot they open in finder but all programs can access the folders and no errors when copying or moving large files.

I have a brand new iMac 27" running Mavericks.

Was pretty shocked to run into these issues trying to use my linux file server.

Experimented a hundred different ways.

SMB1 and SMB2 is BROKEN, period.

As soon as I installed an afp server on my linux box, all issues went away. Dont use SMB, apple really dropped the ball here.

Now if I can just find away around the automount bug which causes network drives to mount as root only, ill be happy.

Hi jack, I run a post login script which creates the directory as the logged in user (e.g. mkdir /Volumes/Data) and then mount the share to it via diskutil. That way the logged in user is owner of the mount point. Of course you'll need a logout script to unmount and remove the directories if you have multiple users on the same mac so that they can then login, make and own the mount points and mount the shares if the directory names need to be the same (as mine need to be)

Hi there,

I have the same problem here, plus a paninful frame drop during Full-HD video playing over the 1 giga bit lan that run just fine before Maveriks (since I can copy the same Video (7-Giga) in less than 7 minutes.

Anycase, I have a Zyxel NSA-325, and I can not mount the volume with afp, I'm only allow to mount in "smb".

do you know any other possible solution to this mess ? I'm havin the 8072 (can't delete these folders(/files) code every time after a while of nice use..

:-(

Hi,

I've had similar issues copying files between osx and Qnap via AFP or SMB:

- from finder to finder screen.

- from Itunes to finder screen.

I'm not sure if the folowing trigger did something, but now I'm copying again fine for a week.

go to finder

command-J

at the bottom of the screen do not select "show preview".

I've (de-)selected this a few times and applied as default.

Regards,

G

Okey... so i have the same problem latest OS X and latest firmware for my Qnap 559-2 or something.

It is only with some files, actually i only found the error with a special group of files. .avi and same serie.

I could not solve the problem, but i could copy, move and erase the files on the local computer.

So WORKS:

Move the files to NAS with FTP works, then just remvoe /move the files from your local computer :-)
