iMac 24 A1200 No Power

Hi!

I recently found an iMac A1200, on the curb, as I do many computers.

No major signs of damage, a few scratches on the lcd which I managed to removewith some alcohol.

When I plug it in, absolutely nothing happens, if you listen closely you can hear a crackle when pluggin the power adaptor in, which means it is getting power from the AC.

I reseated the ram, tried using one stick, tried resetting the PRAM, tried resetting SMC many time, I've tried holding the power button and pluggin it in at the same time, I've tried holding the power button down.

I'm guesing its the power supply, but could there be any other causes? I will probably be opening it up and taking a look tomorrow, but before I do, any other solutions?

Thanks!

There are a few ideas on this model and similar symptoms at the iFixit.com site...

Also there is a guide page showing how to access some of the interior, but no

tear-down in detail.

While it is a bit old, if you live within a 100 miles of an Apple Store where they

have a Genius bar, you could call ahead to set an appointment with Genius

or specialist staff and ask if they could help diagnose this 24" iMac issues.

In the USA/Canada, this has been said to be a free service, while repairs cost.

They could help and suggest a course of action, depending on the outcome.

{Also an authorized independent Specialist reseller with service could help, but

may not offer a 'free diagnostic' service outside of a retail repair fee estimate.

If a thorough diagnostic takes a technicians time, this effort likely costs money.}

If you were to deal with a certified repair company who does this everyday

they may be able to refurbish the computer at a fairer cost & guarantee it.

No retail operation, so there would be no new mac in the front window, etc.

Those are the ones who get tough repair orders from sales-only resellers.

One that I've had experience with requires shipping costs, miles away...

Oh, I didn't inquire which 24" iMac you have; there appears to be four.

1 - white 24" iMac 6.1 A1200,

2 - aluminum Mid-2007 iMac 7.1 A1225

3 - aluminum Early-2008, iMac 8.1 A1225

4 - aluminum Early-2009, iMac 9.1 A1225

The specifications may affect expectations, acquiring the correct boot

replacement disc set from Apple Customer Support, and other details.

A replacement disc set would most easily be acquired from Support

& they can match the correct replacement set when you supply the

iMac serial number & model number. Expect to pay a reasonable fee.

Apple Customer Support: 1-800-767-2775 in USA

The disc set would be a replacement of system discs, if available.

If you can identify which of the three build model series you have,

that would help determine other sources of information available

such as any obsolete take apart, troubleshooting, etc manuals.

There may be a service or repair guide other than iFixit available.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

This looks to be a fair .pdf guide for Late 2006 iMac 20" & 24"

these share build month year interval & most parts of the vintage.

There may be a newer guide (not white imac; 1st aluminum) with

less compatibility but that was not what I found looking around. As

I tested the link, it will download some old tech source information.

The troubleshooting info in page 157 is basic run-through, other

pages have a few images and read like you'd have a part source.

The search link from google in earlier post shows power supplies.

Hopefully this helps.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
