I think there is a solution that will allow you to continue using your Nvidia GPU, and therefore use external displays, etc. I have tried disabling GPU switching and using the gfxCardStatus solution, but many OSX applications simply over-ride these. I applied this today after suffering the regular OSX crash and GPU panic on my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro ever since upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. Apple introduced Memory Compression in order to make more memory available to the apps currently in use. Switching this off seems to have the effect of speeding up older Macs that have been struggling to run memory-hungry apps since upgrading OSX version and also seems to cure the GPU panic crashes. To disable memory compression open Terminal and run this command:sudo nvram boot-args&#x3D;"vm_compressor&#x3D;1"You will be prompted to enter your system password. No further response will be received, all you need to do is reboot and cross your fingers!
