Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 17" max ram?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 17" and I was wondering if I would be able to upgrade from the 8 gigs of ram that it says is its maximum to 16 gigs? Would this cause problems with my computer if I do this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The maximum RAM amount that a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro can use is 8 GB. However, there's an exception with the Mid 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro, that supports 16 GB of RAM.

If you install 16 GB of RAM, nothing bad will happen always that you use the correct RAM type, but Mac OS X will only use 8 GB. You can buy more RAM at OWC or Crucial
