Why do icons rearrange themselves?

In certain windows I like for documents and folders to be arranged in a particular order. A number of times I have arranged about 30 items in the order I want. They'll stay that way for awhile, but in a few days I'll open that window and they will be alphabetized. Numerous times I've checked View>Always open in icon view. I come back a week or so later and it's unchecked. Why does that happen, and how can I stop my computer from helping me get my stuff in order? Using 10.8.5.

The icons rearranging themselves was an issue in Lion too. Under View / Show View Options, I've sometimes -- but not always -- had success by choosing Arrange By: None (and I choose Sort By: Snap to Grid). Have you tried that?
