Mavericks, CUDA and Nvidia 285

I have a 3,1 Mac Pro with an Nvidia GTX285 graphics card. The update to Mavericks has stopped all CUDA functionality on my system, which I use a lot for Premiere and After Effects. Adobe say it is an Nvidia driver problem. Nvidia say that the driver is now built in to Mavericks and have been totally useless at resolving the problem. Has anybody experienced, or better yet, solved this problem? It would be really nice to be able to use both Mavericks and CUDA.

Please don't tell me not to be an early adopter. I can roll back my system if needs be, but really, I'd prefer it if it just worked as advertised!

Thanks 🙂

Almost every 10.8.x update req'd a new "CUDA" driver from Nvidia which are posted on their site. Not sure why they didn't direct you there. Or maybe they aren't ready.

Nvidia and others, even though they had access to pre-release, it really is only when a product like new OS ships they can look and see the actual bits.

The basic nvidia driver is there, but reinstalling or install the latest CUDA driver is usually necessary by you and I as end users.

Thanks for the prompt response! Sadly, reinstalling the driver made no difference for me, and Nvidia haven't made a new driver for the card itself (as opposed to the CUDA driver) available. It's just such a shame, because it was working so well before (briefly)! I've noticed that I've needed to update drivers frequently as well, as CUDA seems to keep breaking.

I spent over an hour trying to chat with Apple reps to find out this issue. NVIDIA is getting back with me. The problem is that CUDA support for GTX 285 and lower cards is non-exsitstant in OS X 10.9 Mavericks. This is different than a driver issue. The driver works.

CUDA 5.5.28 Released from NVIDIA on 2013.10.23 does not support the GTX 285.

What is surprising is that NVIDIA is saying Apple needs to take care of it and Apple is saying NVIDIA does. In the meantime, those of us who edit video and color grade footage and still use a GTX 285 would appreciate tapping into its CUDA cores!

@BOATY96, So your saying that you got CUDA 5.5 working on a GeForce? Am running a 320M on mine and the Cuda doesn't work, it installs, did the sdk and all with samples, but it fails, and pops out the error no device found when running device inquiring.

- I just got into Mining for coins too! I really need this extra boost, since am kinda unemployed and stuck in a forest with no transportation. For the time being am trying to figure out how to unistall the Cuda, and use an older driver like 4.2 and see if that works.

- Can you please describe how you changed the opencl file? Like where is it located, what do you have to modify in the file etc.. It would be greatly appreciated. I don't run alot of games at this time, just Adobe CC and such.

- I also heard that the reason why it isn't working had to do with Kext files... I certain one is loaded and if it is unloaded it will work. Another thing I heard was the fact of all the super cool energy efficient things that 10.9 Mavericks can do. In doing so it is shutting Cuda down. Someone said that in system preferences and energy there was a bod with a check mark to help prevent that; yet I fail to see a box with a check mark.

Anyway please hit me back, thanks.

Hey Richard,

I did not get cuda working with mavericks and my GTX 285. What i did do was adjust premiere's opencl_supported_cards.txt file ( get to it by right clicking the premiere app ---> show contents ---> contents folder ---> opencl_supported_cards.txt ) and added my card to the list.

It did work however it was a little buggy so I turned it off.

My GTX card doesn't advertise that it supports opencl but whatever drivers apple has built into the os seems to do the job. As far as bitcoin mining, I've used guiminer and it will push my gtx card using opncl pretty hard. I get over 3 times the performance from it than I do with my 8 core 3.2Ghz CPU.

I will advise you that mining bitcoins with this setup is pretty futile. One could run their computer for weeks and not see anything. You'll spend more money on electricity than you will ever see gaining any fraction of a bitcoin.

I have the same combination. I use this configuration for video editing Adobe Premiere Adobe After effects.

Till now there is no solution.

Everyone (Apple, Nvidia and Adobe) is pointing to each other.

The reuslt of this is that the customer is left with a problem.

I wait patently till af solid solution is available. I will not upgrade to Maverick.

Depending on the offered solutions I will decide in the future what products to buy...

I have a simular problem with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 and Davinci Resolve,

" No CUDA Acceleration Hardwear Detected! "

It all works fine under Mountain lion or Windows.

It's a real bummer that this issue is not resolved after month.

Appel used to be better in solving this kind of problems , I reckon Iphone's and Ipad's are more importend then Pro apps.

I dunno every time I install a Cuda such as the 6.0 RC version that came out. Am on the developer board. It does that same thing a dry run. Though am working on it. I have to get the right MPI Library installed, and such other things am assuming. Also am using a Geforece 320M I was told the 3.0 driver from what I read on the forums would work. I did do an installed, yet it failed said something about the driver version and runtime version. So still got to test out different driver versions.
