Why can't I partiton my hard drive?

I am attempting to partition my hard drive so that I can keep Snow Leopard on one partition and download Mavericks onto a new one. When I started, I had about 40 gigs of data on my 320-gig drive. I tried to create two equal partitions of 160 gigs each. The attempt failed and suggested I try different sizes, so I tried again specifying partitions of 180 gigs (for Snow Leopard) and 140 gigs (for Mavericks). During the attempt, a curtain fell over my screen saying I must shut down my computer and restart. I did that and now I still have only the one partition but the data takes up about 190 gigs. Even if I could partition, I won't have enough room for all this on the new partition, so there isn't any point. Is there some way I can shrink the data back to 40 gigs and then partition successfully?

A couple of things. First you need to figure out where the additional 150 GBs of stuff resides. I've never seen that happen. As for the curtain, that's a kernel panic. Post the panic log. It should be in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ or in /username/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/.

I can't find a PanicReporter utility, however I found a diagnostic report for today on the Console which doesn't make a lot of sense to me and the time is wrong. In any case, the first dozen lines are as follows:

When I tried partitioning, Snow Leopard was running (along with a few programs). I understood this wouldn't interfere with the partition, but now I wonder. So I am considering booting up with the install disc instead and trying to partition off the 130 gigs of space left. Then I would drag a data set off my backup external drive. The last backup was only 30 gigs, so I would have lots of room left for Mavericks. I would just leave the other overstuffed partition as is—everything on it works well enough. Is this a rational plan?

That's because there isn't such a thing; however, any panic log should show up in /Library/Logs/PanicReporter/. The diagnostic report should be in either /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ or in /username/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/. Assuming that you know how to navigate within your system, you should be able to find the entire report, which might be more than what you posted. As for trying to partiton while booted with the install disc, you can give that shot.

I found a LIbrary/Logs/CrashReporter and it now has two of these Ubunto One reports, one a day since my partition crash it seems. I'm posting the latest one below. I really can't make any sense out of it.

I haven't run Ubunto One for years. Is it possible my attempt to partition triggered it into duplicating files on my hard drive? In any case, I trashed it.

I won't try booting with my install disc until I hear back from you.

I tried partitioning again just for the **** of it, and this time I got a "File system verification failed" message. I googled for a solution and at OSXDaily (http://osxdaily.com/2012/03/05/fix-partition-failed-error-mac/), I found the following:

  1. Reboot the Mac into Single User Mode by holding Command+S during boot
  2. At the command prompt, type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
  3. When fsck is complete, type “exit” or “reboot” to reboot
  4. Boot the Mac as usual, verify the disk again in Disk Utility, and partition as usual

It worked beautifully—shrunk the data back to to its original size and allowed me to partition. I thought you might be interested.

Thanks for your time and effort on my problem.
