Q: Error in Apple AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows?

Hello all.

APEX = AirPort Extreme Gen5 firmware 7.6.4.

APES = AirPort Express Gen2 firmware 7.6.4.

Ethernet = LAN on APEX, WAN on APES.

PC = Apple Airport Utility 5.6.1 for Windows on a Windows 7 64-bit computer.

I'm trying to extend my network on an APEX by connecting a new APES via ethernet, and setting everything up according to the information on the Apple website http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260: same SSID, same security, same password, etc., etc.. On the second link the following screenshot is depicted from the OSX version of the Apple Utility, showing Connect Using <Ethernet> and Connection Sharing <Off (Bridge Mode)>:

On the PC when I set the Connection Sharing to <Off (Bridge Mode)> the Connect Using is automatically set to Wireless and greyed out, so I cannot set it to Ethernet as depicted in the screenshot above. Is this an error in the windows version of Apple AirPort Utility 5.6.1? Please help.

Best regards, Bas

    Check the Wireless tab to make sure that the setting for Wireless Mode is set to Create a Wireless Network with name of the network security and password sections matching the "main" router.

    Then......you will likely see a different picture when you select Internet > Connection Sharing.

    But, rather than change existing settings.....which will likely work......it would be a bit better if you reset the Airport back to factory defaults and then configured again for your needs.

    Actually the answer is in another screenshot on the same Apple website http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260:

    I set the Wireless Mode to <Extend an Existing Network>, but this was my mistake. If I set Wireless Mode to <Create a wireless network> and then keep everything the same: same SSID, same security, same password, etc., etc., I can set Connect Using <Ethernet> and Connection Sharing to <Off (Bridge Mode)> and it works!

    Note #1: I think the term <Create a wireless network> is confusing when I already have a wireless network, but this is what the information from Apple correctly specifies.

    Note #2: Answer to the question extend wireless or extend using ethernet: ethernet! Location of APEX: hall ground floor, location APES: hall 2nd floor. With Ookla Speedtest App version 3.1.2 on an iPad Gen4 iOS 7.0.3 with a fiber internet connection Download 60 Mbps / Upload 60 Mbps, the difference between wireless extended and ethernet extended:

    Location ... Wireless Down / Up ... Ethernet Down / Up

    Living Room ... 47.56 / 36.49 Mbps ... 43.88 / 32.58 Mbps

    Hall Ground Floor (APEX) ... 48.47 / 30.43 Mbps ... 53.08 / 34.47 Mbps

    Hall 1st Floor ... 16.68 / 7.68 Mbps ... 44.58 / 38.06 Mbps

    Master Bedroom ... 7.37 / 8.07 Mbps ... 36.07 / 30.93 Mbps

    Hall 2nd Floor (APES) ... 14.65 / 11.87 Mbps ... 43.85 / 37.14 Mbps

    Guest Bedroom ... 8.51 / 11.55 Mbps ... 36.95 / 36.60 Mbps

    Need I say more?

    Best regards, Bas
