Ipod not readable, permanent "do not disconnect" warning

I have a 2G nano. I recently got back from a few days vacation and iTunes could not see it, maybe due to low battery. I unsuccesfully used the IPod Updater and this is my current situation:

After plugging it in, the "do not disconnect" warning appears on the iPod screen -but my iPod never shows up in iTunes. My laptop can only recognize my iPod in windows explorer as a "removable disk". iPod Updater does not see it either.
When I unplug my Nano, it behaves like it has just been reset, empty.

I am clueless here, any ideas what to do?

Thank you,

Stefanos

Thank-you for these most timely instructions. Just got my nano and went through all the stuff on the main Apple help pages (uninstalling, restarting, blah, blah, blah!). I was about ready to toss myself and the nano off the balcony when I came accross this posting. I wish I had gone here first. As soon as I reformatted, it worked like a charm.
