Apple Infrared Remote Control can't wake Mavericks Mac

I use my Mac Mini as a media centre running Plex.

When its idle for a period of time the OS X screen saver will kick in.

Prior to Mavericks I used to be able to stop the screen saver or wake the computer by pressing the menu button on the Apple Infrared Remote Control that I use to control Plex. This functionality no longer works in Mavericks and so far i have been unable to find a solution.

When pressing the buttons on the remote I can hear the button sounds in Plex as if its accepting the remote input but its just not stopping the screen saver. I have to use the keyboard or mouse to stop the screen saver, which I would rather not do obviously.

Can anyone alse attest to having this issue, not necessarily with Plex.
