Dropbox is asking for my Macbooks PW!

Hello, I just got finished installing Dropbox onto my Macbook. When i opened Dropbox for the first time a popup appeared:

Plese enter your Mac OS password for this computer in order for Dropbox to work properly.

Type your password to allow this.

Name: XXXXX XXXXX

Password: _________

Does this sound strange to only me? Is there a reason they need my computers password for this program to work?

Thank you, in advance, for your help.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Yes, I am also having this problem. I always exit and do not respond to the prompt; and I have clean re-installed Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac mid-2011 with 32 Gb Memory and it is still having problems with Dropbox, with loading applications on start-up in a timely fashion, with Finder frequently not responding (and it does not improve when it is relaunched), and with the bird application taking greater than 100% CPU time (I have been told in Apple Support Communities that bird is an iCloud Drive application). There is no reason for Dropbox to require your or my computer password. This is either a bug, a deliberate attempt to access information on our computers that should not be accessed, or Mac OS X Yosemite is not playing nice with Dropbox. As a customer of both companies I really do not care who is to blame. I just want the problem fixed. Apple and Dropbox should not be pointing fingers. They should be solving problems for their customers.

Thank you CMCSK and Linc. I am going to go the Dropbox tech support route, just to see what they say. But I am curious to see if others have gotten this same popup and had any problems with Dropbox. User uploaded file

I've been with Dropbox since around 2008 or so. Now it's possible that the newer versions need the Mac os password. I do know this was not so, when it was initially released.
