Can't switch users or log off since upgrading to Mavericks

Is anyone else having problems since upgrading to OS X Mavericks? We thought the upgrade went flawlessly, but now we can't switch between users because nothing happens. We can't log off to switch, the system times out to the grey screen with the clock like circle. Our only solution is a hard boot.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I guess I spoke too soon. The problem kept recurring, so this morning I reinstalled Mavericks, hoping maybe a bit of code got scrambled during the first run. But alas, no joy in Logoutland. And System Prefs still freezes intermittently. The truly odd thing is that this seems to be either a random bug, or hardware related in some way, because the issue is with my 2 yr-old Mini, but not my 1 yr-old MacBook Pro — which is pretty much a mirror of the Mini. Go figure... Hopefully there will be a fix in 10.9.1 — soon, I hope.

I finally found a fix that has solved every problem I was having — freezing Sys Prefs, failed logout/shutdown/restart, finder windows not populating, Adobe CC aps running like molasases uphill in December... I restored Mt. Lion! And I'm gonna wait for the .2 or even .3 update before I consider installing Mavericks again. I guess if you name an OS after a beach, you've gotta expect sand in the gearbox. 😝

I've never had any software or drivers for external drives installed. I use a Lacie external connected via Firewire 800. I had tried unplugging everything except the keyboard, uninstalling or disabling a lot of 3rd party apps and utilities and pref panes, trashing countless prefs. None of it made a difference. The Sys Prefs freezes diminished slightly, but the finder quirks and no logout/restart/shut-down issue remained — especially after an hour or so of processor-intensive work, like running several Adobe CC apps simultaneously. And this was happening on my desktop and laptop Macs. So, IMHO, it looks like a possible memory leak problem?

Since restoring 10.8.5, I have had zero problems and 100% uptime. If you're lucky, your measures will, over time, prove to have worked for you. But — and I don't mean to rain on your parade — I wouldn't be shocked if you saw an encore performance of these problems in the near future.

BTW, since I don't use my MBP for graphics work very often, I'm leaving Mavericks on that machine as a "crash dummy". I'll see if 10.9.1 or .2 make a difference, and when I can do the heavy lifting on that machine, I'll upgrade my Mini again. My clients pay me to do their advertising, not to reboot my computer a half dozen times a day. 😉

I have pretty much the same problem. I can switch to an alternate user from my main one, but I can't go back again. If I go to the login window I just get a gray screen with a spinning black wheel. I end up having to restart.

Also the restart/shut down from the Apple pull down menu don't work, at least in the alternate user (I don't think I've tried it in the main user window). And the buttons that show up on the screen to restart/shut down the computer after you hit the button in the back (by the way, I'm on a mid-2011 21.5-inch iMac) don't work either. The only way to shut down is to hold the button in the back for a while. There doesn't seem to be a way to restart.

I have nothing connected to the computer but a Seagate back-up drive. I've tried disconnecting it, restarting it, and get the same problem.

Well, this morning I restored my MBP to Mt. Lion, too. Every time I fire it up to copy files from my Mini (via file sharing or Air Drop) my network connection drops. If you poke around these forums, you'll find that this, too, is a not uncommon problem with Mavericks. Evidently 10.9 does not play well with some wireless routers — especially the non-Apple dual-band variety (I have a Belkin N750 DB).

Some folks have posted work-arounds or remedies, but most are so complex and "eye of newt" in nature, that I decided I'd rather restore my previous system than jump through hoops only to find something else broken.

I'm gonna wait out the next 2 or three Mavericks updates and keep an eye on these boards to see if things are smoothing out.
