Q: OS X Mavericks download not working

Ok so this is probably my 5th time trying at this download. I have a macbook air and I have looked up ways to make the download work. I've tried re installing the app and rebooting my laptop. Everytime I install the app the bar does not move. It stays the same. I have run out of options on what to do. Any help?

    Create a temporary User account for the sole purpose of downloading and installing Mavericks. See this video, or this article for instructions for OS X Lion. See this article for instructions for OS X Mountain Lion.

     

    Make sure to check the box for "Allow user to administer this computer".

     

    Log out of your normal account, log in to the temporary account, and attempt to download Mavericks again while using that account. You will be using the same Apple ID as you have been using.

     

    You can always delete the account later.

    In Launchpad, click and hold the "Downloading" icon until it "shakes", then click the x button at the upper left. Acknowledge the dialog to delete the partially downloaded file, and the icon should disappear. Try downloading it again from the App Store.

     

    Are you behind a proxy server? To find out go to Safari's Preferences menu and select the Advanced tab.

     

    Next to Proxies click the Change Settings... button. Your Network Preferences will appear.

     

    In Network Preferences, click the Advanced... button, then the Proxies tab.

     

    Is anything selected under "Select a protocol to configure"?

    I have tried the first part many of times. Still nothing. I just tried to safari one and nothing was checked.

    Thanks, I understand this is frustrating.

     

    Try the following. You will need to locate the Terminal app in your Mac's Utilities folder. It looks like this:

    Find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.

     

    Open Terminal.

     

    Copy (triple-click to select the entire line) and Paste the following line into the Terminal window, followed by the Return or Enter key:

     

    defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true

     

    Quit the App Store and re-open it. There will be a new menu in the App Store named "Debug". From that menu first select Clear Cookies, and then Reset Application. Nothing will appear to happen.

     

    Try to download Mavericks again. You will need to sign in again.

     

    You can leave the Debug menu present, but if you want to get rid of it choose Enable Debug Menu, and then quit the App Store. Next time you launch the App Store the Debug menu will be gone.

    This last one seems to have worked for me! Thank you!!

     

    At first I thought it hadnt as in the app store this appeared:

    But then looking at launchpad the download is working, slowly but surely! Fingers crossed it keeps going, but it has got past the point it was getting stuck at before so I'm optimistic!!

    I just tried it right now. I'm gonna wait a couple of hours to see if it made an improvment in downloading.

    My optimism was premature It got stuck again! I'm going to leave it going for a bit in the hope that it will de-stick but I am no longer optimistic!!

     

    Thank you for all your suggestions by the way, much appreciated! Hopefully we will get there eventually!!

    I'm afraid I'm out of ideas sophiaa_c

     

    Although starting your Mac in "safe mode" should have obviated any concern about what may be preventing it from downloading, please consider running EtreCheck in accordance with the instructions below. It may reveal a clue that may help.

     

    None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide additional information required to advance troubleshooting.

     

    If your Mac is not already running Lion or later, and you can't find your original grey OS X Install DVD, just bypass the first section regarding OS X Recovery and Disk Utility.


    If you are running OS X "Lion" or later, boot OS X Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. For Snow Leopard, start your Mac while holding the c key with its original OS X Install DVD inserted in its optical drive.

     

    At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.

     

    When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:


    Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

    Copy and paste its output in a reply.

     

    Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.

     

    EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

     

    When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

    Count your blessings that you've not been able to download Mavericks.

     

    Have a quick glance at the discussion titles at - OSX Mavericks Discussions, and see for yourself what's going on.

     

    At the very least, I'd like to think that Apple should stop further downloading of Mavericks for the time being... and spare more people from grief.

    I did, and after a couple of weeks the problems are exactly the same as for every other OS X upgrade, namely, incompatible third party software, "anti-virus" or "cleanup" or "security" junk, and unsupported hardware modifications. They exist in roughly the same proportion as have existed for every other OS X upgrade since Jaguar at least.

     

    Objective comparisons are difficult because the Mac installed user base has grown so large, and this site is where people with problems go. Ultimately you have to consider the fact that Mavericks adoption has been the fastest on record, much faster than Mountain Lion or any of its predecessors, and people are overwhelmingly pleased with it:

    Millions of people have upgraded theirs with only pleasant results. Rather than complaining about it, I suggest you start your own Discussion so that you can fix what's wrong with your Mac. I can find no such Discussion.

    I didnt download it for a couple of days and today I decided to try again and its actually downloading (: I guess leaving it alone for a couple of days help I guess. Thank you for the help
