Q: Mavericks resizes application windows and moves them around

This problem has started since I installed Mavericks. Typically I have Firefox and Outlook loaded most of the time, occasionally other applications such as Spotify. My wife also has an account on the iMac, so she logs in, leaving me logged in. When I switch back to my account, the applications have resized themselves to odd small sizes, and Outlook is sometimes half-way off-screen and can't be moved (if I drag it back on-screen it just snaps back to the off-screen position).

I have found a way to prevent this, and this is to ensure my wife minimises the applications first. Strangely none of her applications (Firefox, Thunderbird, iTunes) move or resize.

Certainly a bug that's arrived with Mavericks, so Apple if you're reading this please fix it.

Same here with a MacBook Air 13 and a iMac 27.

The problem occurs with any App (even Finder!) since i have updated to Mavericks.

When this window resizing occurs, has anyone noticed that if you try and select a different WiFi network that the list of available WiFi networks doesn't populate correctly? In fact you can't even see what other WiFi networks are available. Just curious if anyone else has made that observation.

Same issue on a mavericks on a Macbook air. Very annoying.

After I lock the screen, when I return and log back in, usually Chrome gets "frozen" as a small window. Resizing the window is not possible, so I figured it has something to do with the resolution.

    QUICK FIX (temporary):

The quickest (temporary) fix is to:

    - change the screen resolution (from System Preferences) and then change it back to the initial one.

This will resize the application's windows and they will "unfreeze". Obviously - until next time that happens.

    Waiting for a MacOS fix.

    Same problem here.

    MacBook Pro mid 2010.

Upgraded from a fresh Mountain Lion install to Maverick.

When trying to resize an application the complete application window jumps one time on the screen for a random offset. Found this first using mail but noticed now that this happens to every window.

For mail especially it is annoying, because when i want to extend the mail window to the right lower screen corner the complete mail window jumps down to the middle of the screen, making the window smaller than it was before.

    Addendum:

Just noted that the visual position of the mousepointer does not match the "clicked location" on the screen.

When clicking on the menu bar popups that drop down do not match the position the mouse currently is at.

The mouse poiner sits roughly a finger width left of the point that seems to be the point the os "thinks" the mouse is at.

    Apple please fix this asap.

I have this exact same issue, and I have a iMac 2007.

The issue is extremely frustrating. For me it's random, sometimes when I log into my iMac (we have multiple user accounts) my windows resize and move AGAIN. There is no way to resize it or move it when it's in this state.

The only fix is to close the app and reopen it, then it's free to move around and re-size again... until this issue happens again.

    Please Apple, fix this issue.

No need to quit the app.

See my quick fix with Screen Resolution change.

    Is it working for you?

AndiSIT & cabe83:  these are user to user forums and Apple generally doesn't read them.  Suggest you report it as a bug and include a link to this thread:

There's a similar thread at Ars Technica too:

I have the same problem on both of my iMAC and Macbook Pro running Maverick. Hope that Apple will fix it soon. It is so annoying.

Everyone needs to report this via Apple Care ... The more reports apple get, the higher priority the fix will be.  Don't sit and wait for a fix... Give me a call!

Ps changing refresh does work for a temp fix...

    Do you all use Dropbox?

Every time when the problem occurs on my MBAir i can't open the Dropbox-Menu. Maybe there is a relation between this problem and the Dropbox client on Mavericks?

I will try to work without Dropbox and see if the problem occurs again.

    Greetings,

    Thomas

I use Dropbox on my iMac as well & I can confirm that the menu item does indeed render unusable after the window issue occurs. Maybe its related, we'll see (though on my MacBook with Dropbox installed this never happens..)

I've been seeing the same thing (details here). One thing I will note is that if I put my iMac to sleep again and  wake it up, I can then at least move and resize the window that shrunk and got stuck. Helpful when it is Thunderbird - that way I don't have to enter all my passwords again.

I do use Dropbox, but only via Finder, so I'm not sure what "Dropbox - Menu" refers to. Let me know and I'll try it the next time this happens (which hasn't been for a week or so).

I wonder if this is a "solution"

I had an offending folder which, when opened, refused to drag-expand normally without snapping into another position and reducing its size. I opened this offending folder, (apparently others seem to act "normally",) and clicked on the dropdown menu at the top "Action"(with the gear wheel) I then went to "show view options" and clicked a few boxes on and off, changed the text size, then changed it back as well as changing the "Arrange by:" and "Sort by: and then changing them back to what it was before. Somethings buggy there!
