iPad word definition feature stopped working

One of the iPad features I often use is the agility to highlight a word and be provided with a definition. Apparently, I lost the feature in one of my iOS system upgrades. I am left only with the ability to look up the word on the Internet, which is slower, and requires an internet connection.
