    Holger,

The new version of Numbers shed many features of the previous version.  Headers and Footers seems to have been lost.  You can post ffedback to Apple using the menu item "Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback"

It seems Apple's vision for you (you really want that but just don't know it yet ) is that you would rather view your work and show it to others on Apple devices or on the web, rather than printing it out in paged documents.

Yes, thats what they want. It seams that they also want us oldschool-user to change to Microsoft Office. Funny.

In the meanwhile, you can continue to use these features by accessing the previous versions of the iWork applications which remain installed on your Mac. The previous versions can be found in Applications > iWork ’09.Reverting documents created in the new iWork for Mac applications to the previous version’s file formatNew or existing documents you open in the new versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote use the new unified file format. These files can’t be opened in the previous versions of the iWork applications. To revert the document file format to the previous version, you can do one of the following:

    1. Documents that you haven't edited can be reverted to the iWork ’09 version by selecting File > Revert To.
    2. If you have edited the document and want to preserve the edits, you can save it as an iWork ’09 document by selecting File > Export To, then choosing Pages ’09, Numbers ’09, or Keynote ’09.

I agree with all the posts here.

I've been systematically moving away from MS-Office. Excel has some really useful features even for the casual user but I was willing to sacrifice them for compatibility across devices. Syncing Numbers and Pages docs from the Mac to the iPad was already a challenge. The iPad was demoting itself to a read-only device mainly because of formatting issues. Just just moving objects around on the iPad was not simple.

Having to reuse an older version of Numbers is really a step too far. Managing versions of documents on multiple devices is a nightmare. It would then be easier to use Excel and PDF. Generally I like Apple's updates because there is usually more gain than loss. Version 3 has taken away more from my workflow than it has provided. I have sent feedback already.

    lain,

Another way to express your opinion of the new version of Numbers is to write a Product Review on the Mac App Store.

Just found this thread after filing a bug on this.

Numbers is simply unprofessional.  I'm trying to create a cost breakdown for a client, and can't produce a properly formatted document.  That's a disgrace, especially in an application that has been around for years in a highly mature product category.

    Hi Stokestack,

If you can describe what you are trying to do with a cost breakdown and formatting, maybe someone here can find a solution. As this thread has been marked as Solved, please post a new question so that the specific details will help other users. Be sure to update your profile with your products (machine(s), operating system(s), Numbers version) so that we are not shooting in the dark .

Yeah, that's what wie all want. The lastest update obviously was a downgrade to the previous version. It seems to work better with iWorks in the cloud, but it's Not what we all want. We want to get the complete functionality of the previous version plus better workaround in the web. So wie all have to wait for the update.

    They're back!

Headers and footers returned to iWorks in the actual version. Just click "Print" and there tey are! You get the printview after the click on the printbutton. Here you can modify your headers an footers!

    Go work thanks.

Wow.  The designers turned a simple, totally intuitive process into a complicated, multi step and difficult to discover process.

I guess now that Steve's gone, they are trying to show they have their own "new" approach to design and usability.

It's also neat that while I can seamlessly edit and work on older versions of Excel, I get the privilege of being forced to upgrade my older Numbers documents to a newer version which is not backwards compatible so everyone I work with is privileged to be forced into the same process.
