What is com.apple.MediaLibraryService?

I just upgraded to Mavericks and iTunes 11.1.2. A few other quick notes on my setup:

  • I wirelessly sync to my iPhone 4S running iOS7.
  • My iTunes and iPhoto libraries are located on a remote disk that I am connected to wirelessly. My router is a Time Capsule with a Lacie HD hooked up to it. The Lacie is where the iTunes and iPhoto LIbraries are located.

First, everything seems to work fine. There is one thing that I noticed though, when I am listening to iTunes internet radio (WXPN or Radio Paradise), I notice that this app (com.apple.MediaLIbraryService) keeps running in the background. It is a drain on the CPU and battery and I notice that my Lacie HD is always spinning. Before the upgrade, the drive would sleep, even while I was listening to internet radio on iTunes because I was not accessing any files.

The app does disappear when I shut down iTunes.

What is the app doing and how can I stop it from being a CPU and battery drain, along with stop spinning up the Lacie HD?

Thanks in advance!

Just bumping this back up. I haven't found any info and hoping someone else has.

Again, thanks in advance!

I'm also seeing poor system performance and excessive NAS access when iTunes is running. Shutting iTunes solves the problem. Found this thread as I noticed com.apple.MediaLibraryService had racked up tens of hours of CPU time.

27" iMac, quad i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, all of iTunes library (necessarily) sitting on a Synology NAS.

All the trouble started with upgrade to Mavericks.

In Activity Viewer I did analyze the com.apple.MediaLibraryService process. It seemed to be very busy with some plugin: /Library/Application Support/iLifeMediaBrowser/Plug-Ins/iLMBAperturePlugin2012.ilmbplugin

I'm not sure what it does and what it is used for, but I moved the iLMBAperturePlugin2012.ilmbplugin away from that plugins folder. Since then com.apple.MediaLibraryService is running, but almost idle.

The response by tim_r_66 made me check my Maverics&Numbers setup, because I had notices excessive memory and CPU consumption on my MBP5,1 :

- When I open a document with Numbers 3.1 or Pages 5.1, com.apple.MediaLibraryService appears in the Activity Monitor, shows > 100% CPU consuption and creates a 1,8 GB mammuth in memory.

- When I open a document in Keynote 6.1, com.apple.MediaLibraryService does not show right away. But when I open the Media inspector from the tool bar, com.apple.MediaLibraryService starts up with same result as with Numbers and Pages.

- CPU consumption goes down to moderate single digits in a while, but the mammoth disappears only after the termination of the application.

I have some 18K photos in my iPhoto Library and 3,6K songs in iTunes Library. For some reason the processing of the Library has become very sticky lately. I might have to rebuild the library database. I would not like to do it, because previously it has brought back all the deleted pictures ...

I am back in front of my computer poking around a bit. I realized too that these problems started about the same time I also noticed several instances of mdworker are almost always running. I've also been working through OD/Kerberos/Cert issues which seem to impact my mounted home directories, so I cannot be certain these are related unless others are experiencing similar issues?
