What is com.apple.MediaLibraryService?

This didn't work for me... I've tried it without positive results.

The problem seems to be a "large" Media Library associated to an iCloud account. Doesn't matter if it's Music, photos or whatever.

That is why it happens in some computers and not in others. At least that is what I've found out until now. In my case is my Music Library (320 GB). But the wierd thing is that the problem only occurs when I open Pages or Numbers. Not with iTunes...

In any case, I still believe is a bug. So please report to apple via Pages, Numbers or OS feedback.

P.D What I did, and worked for me, was to "downgrade" to 5.0.1 (previous version). The process doesn't use so much memory when I open pages. Computer running smooth.

That can't be the casae because I don't have any library associated with an ICloud account. I only have the problem on my MacPro. On the MacBookPro with Pages up it doesn't happen.

In any case it's a "bug" so please report.

I don't believe that downloading it again will make it work. But definetivley there is something on your macbook pro that is NOT present on your "MacPro" that makes this happen. Anyway it's difficult to know. Some have reported the Media Library size as I said. But of course, I'm not sure. And doesn't make sense the fact that my library media is "music" and has nothing to do with pages.

I recommend "downgrading" to Pages 5.0.1 it worked for me.

I have reported the bug, like so many other bugs in Maverick.Guess we got what we paid for!

If open any Iwork function media....opens and memory just start rammining, pun intended, right up.

FWIW, it seems to be triggered by apps running together. iTunes alone won't usually trigger the issue, but iTunes and Aperture will. Same for any of the iWork apps or iPhoto. My guess is it's related to how they share the media library.

Trying to listen to a little music thorough iTunes while I edit RAW photos in Aperture and Photoshop will now bring my system to its knees.

This has been going on since launch of Maverics and it's still there in the latest build of 10.9.2. No fix is in sight.

Reinstalling Pages did not have any positive effect for me. I do not need to have multiple apps running. Any one of the iWork suite is sufficient to cause the problem so I don't think it has to be a sharing issue so much as simply a com.apple.MediaLibraryService issue. There does seem to be a relationship between the problem and the size of the iPhoto library. My iTunes library is pretty small overall; not much music but a decent number of apps. However, my iPhoto Library is over 50G.

KBeat, you mentioned 10.9.2. Is that beta? I only have 10.9.1.

Thanks for the hint. I closed Pages and got back 1gb on my 4gb iMac!

Doing some quick testing Pages and NUmbers both start up mediaserviceslibrary up and ***** memory, nothing else not even Itunes. Itunes opens it but memory use is reasonable. No other programs seem to effect this situation.

Reinstalling Pages did not have any positive effect for me either. It is now proved that Pages has a serieus memory usage problem that makes the app unusable. I've downgraded tot Pages 09 and will wait for an update that solves the problem.

Mac Pro with 48GB RAM, 102K items in iTunes (about 2TB), iPhoto/Aperture lib that's 3.5TB.

I didn't notice this for a while, but it seems like com.apple.MediaLibraryService was eating 22GB of RAM on my box. I'm not using photosharing in iTunes.

In my case what makes this happen every single time is: open up the new versions of Pages or Numbers. And... MediaLibraryService starts eating RAM.

How to fix: just quit Pages or Numbers, and everything goes back to normal.

Works for me. I did not need to remove any plugins or make any other changes, I simply cannot leave Pages or Numbers open, or MediaLibraryService will eventually suck down all available open resources on my box, which is a pretty amazing accomplishment, usually I need to open Maya or Final Cut to accomplish something like that..

Ditto to Phantom Access post. I have the exact same situation and MacPro configuration. Turn off Pages and it goes away. Since I use it more on my laptop I'm not suffering, but, as I pointed out previously, THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ON MY LAPTOP. I have Pages open on my MacBookPro as I type this along with several other apps and there is absolutely NO MediaLibrary.Service showing on this machine. Same version of Pages, same basic setups.

That indicates to me that the problem is more complex. If it happens on one machine and not the other there has to be some arcane reason for it.

Note: I also don't have any media library connections and rarely use Itunes. I don't like it.

I just found this thread as I was wondering what was suddenly sucking up so much RAM, and went to find out what this MediaLibraryService was (it was 2nd only to Photoshop). I happened to have recently had Numbers open and just quit it (actually, it was still listed as open in Activity Monitor but not in my doc… bit weird… so quit it in there) and the MLS went away on its own. My iTunes is still open (and set to share with my AppleTV), so at least for this instance, it's the stupid new version of Numbers… I have Apeture, but it's been closed at least since my last restart.

Luckily it didn't seem to replace my older versions of iWork when it upgraded on its own (when I did Mavericks I'd guess?), but I already converted some of my regular spreadsheets to the annoying new version. I'll just have to make sure to quit every time (which I do anyway as they tend to hog memory much more than the older version, and Adobe is already sucking the life out of my poor MBP as is!)

Mine's a mid-09 MBP with 8MB (and a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo if it matters)

To all, seems the service is behaving now with 10.9.2 update. Here's what I see now:

Pages: service is consistently at 460.5MB RAM usage

Numbers:service is consistently at 468.0MB RAM usage (after maxing out at 589.4MB)

Keynote: service is consistently at 468.1MB RAM usage (after maxing out at 610.0MB)

iTunes:* service is consistently at 300.1MB RAM usage

*iTunes Photo Sharing w/ATV turned on and sharing photos from iPhoto.

Hopefully, 10.9.2 helps you all out.
