Q: What is com.apple.MediaLibraryService?

I just upgraded to Mavericks and iTunes 11.1.2.  A few other quick notes on my setup:

  • I wirelessly sync to my iPhone 4S running iOS7.
  • My iTunes and iPhoto libraries are located on a remote disk that I am connected to wirelessly.  My router is a Time Capsule with a Lacie HD hooked up to it.  The Lacie is where the iTunes and iPhoto LIbraries are located.

First, everything seems to work fine.  There is one thing that I noticed though, when I am listening to iTunes internet radio (WXPN or Radio Paradise), I notice that this app (com.apple.MediaLIbraryService) keeps running in the background.  It is a drain on the CPU and battery and I notice that my Lacie HD is always spinning.  Before the upgrade, the drive would sleep, even while I was listening to internet radio on iTunes because I was not accessing any files.

The app does disappear when I shut down iTunes.

What is the app doing and how can I stop it from being a CPU and battery drain, along with stop spinning up the Lacie HD?

Thanks in advance!

@edzHelp: Yes, I restarted iTunes after disabling photo sharing, and I also rebooted my Mac. Today, after the reboot, it took a few hours until com.apple.MediaLibraryService appeared at 100%. It does not run automatically when iTunes is running, but runs only if iTunes is running and it always quits when I quit iTunes.

I do not use iPhoto, but I use Aperture, which is the same library format. The Aperture.aplibrary itself is on my local system drive inside my home folder. But a lot of my RAW files are stored outside of the library as referenced image: some on my second HDD inside my MacBook Pro, some on external drives (that are currently disconnected). Aperture allowes you to relocate your RAW files through a menu command.

I'm also seeing poor system performance and excessive NAS access when iTunes is running. Shutting iTunes solves the problem. Found this thread as I noticed com.apple.MediaLibraryService had racked up tens of hours of CPU time.

27" iMac, quad i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, all of iTunes library (necessarily) sitting on a Synology NAS.

All the trouble started with upgrade to Mavericks.

In Activity Viewer I did analyze the com.apple.MediaLibraryService process. It seemed to be very busy with some plugin: /Library/Application Support/iLifeMediaBrowser/Plug-Ins/iLMBAperturePlugin2012.ilmbplugin

I'm not sure what it does and what it is used for, but I moved the iLMBAperturePlugin2012.ilmbplugin away from that plugins folder. Since then com.apple.MediaLibraryService is running, but almost idle.

I just saw this same process com.apple.MediaLibraryService using more than 1GB of RAM, but the strange thing is iTunes hasn't run since I updated to Mavericks. Apparently also the iWork apps use this service. After closing Numbers the process was terminated by the system and the MLS stopt using the RAM.

    EmerikDS,

I just discovered the same thing when working with Numbers.  I haven't tried the other iWork apps.  I wonder if this is related to the Numbers 3.1 update from four days ago?

I didn't notice the process until after the update, but I can't say for sure it wasn't there before the update. Anyone hasn't updated yet that can check this?

The response by tim_r_66 made me check my Maverics&Numbers setup, because I had notices excessive memory and CPU consumption on my MBP5,1 :

    - When I open a document with Numbers 3.1 or Pages 5.1, com.apple.MediaLibraryService appears in the Activity Monitor, shows > 100% CPU consuption and creates a 1,8 GB mammuth in memory.

    - When I open a document in Keynote 6.1, com.apple.MediaLibraryService does not show right away. But when I open the Media inspector from the tool bar, com.apple.MediaLibraryService starts up with same result as with Numbers and Pages.

    - CPU consumption goes down to moderate single digits in a while, but the mammoth disappears only after the termination of the application.

I have some 18K photos in my iPhoto Library and 3,6K songs in iTunes Library. For some reason the processing of the Library has become very sticky lately. I might have to rebuild the library database. I would not like to do it, because previously it has brought back all the deleted pictures ...

Seems the problem is indeed this Media Inspector.

Before you rebuild your database maybe you can empty the trash? I would suspect when the pictures are realy removed they can not be brought back by rebuilding the database.

Has anybody analyzed the com.apple.MediaLibraryService process in the Activity Viewer? Since I removed the iLMBAperturePlugin2012.ilmbplugin I haven't experienced the problem again.

I have not analyzed anything. What is the iLMBAperture... plugin used for?  My system is pretty stock right now. Only thing probably worth mentioning is that I'm operating in a networked environment.

I am back in front of my computer poking around a bit.  I realized too that these problems started about the same time I also noticed several instances of mdworker are almost always running.  I've also been working through OD/Kerberos/Cert issues which seem to impact my mounted home directories, so I cannot be certain these are related unless others are experiencing similar issues?

Don't know if it's much help but I've been having similar problems except the process starts using memory when I open Pages or Numbers, this only happens with the new update, fs_usage is always running so trying it through terminal doesn't seem to work.

Also had this problem, might be the new update? Did you notice this happenning before Pages 5.1?

    Hello.

This is happening to me too. Happens when I open Pages 5.1 or Numbers 3.1

I think is a bug. It didn't happen on the previous versions.

    Anyone has a workaround?

Same problem here. I also found that in fact two of these services are running (one for Pages and one for Numbers, Keynote is not running), each consuming about 1,5 GB memory.

I updated to the new versions of iWork two days ago.

    Really annoying, Apple
