My sound is not working
MacBook Pro, OS X 10.8.5
hi, i did all of the following steps however they didnt work..
when i tries reseting PRAM it worked and then i turned off my computer and it went back to not working again. i then retried all of these steps they just didnt help 😟
Go step by step and test.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
Highlight Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
3. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
4. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
Audio Devices window
Side Bar
Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
6. Update Boom, Windows Media Player and all other third party plug-ins.
In addition to what dominic23 has posted,(which covers it all) also check that the volume controlss at each of the locations he mentioned are turned up.
If this is in regard to a web site (You Tube foe Ex.) click on the speaker icon on the bootom of the screen and make sure that is turned up.
I did PRAM and it solved the problem.
yawkadjei,
Thank you for the check, but it was dominic23's suggesstion that actually solved your problem, you should at the very least give him a "star" for this helped. Just to be polite.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities
Hey dominic,
Are you an audio guy?
I wish I was. In my collage days we used to play around with Logic Express.
Apple stopped selling Logic Express few years back.
GarageBand is the one for us, non audio techs to create all those funny audio tracks
and mixes. Once in a while I go and watch the Logic Pro in action.
No, I am not a Media Lab type guy.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Best.
Well just the less, I'm sure you can appreciate this, if they let it go thru, I'm sure you will get a chuckle. I am an audio guy, if this link works pass it along, I'm sure any of your A-1 Friends will enjoy.

hey everyone, after updating my ipad 2 to ios 7.4 the sound stopped working unless I plugged it into speakers or headhpones. the sound bar was gray in the music folder. If you do a DFU (look on youtube, so helpful) it seems to get it back.
Hope this helps
nlk123,
You should start a new thread on yor problem, this one has been checked as solved, and thus very few people will look at it.
First have you turned it off and restarted it?
Next have you tried a reset?

If no joy try startig a new thread so more people will look at it.
You may want to post on the iPad site as well, that's where the heavy iPad users hang out.

Hope this helps
just had the same issue...unplugging USB speakers caused it. I solved the problem by pluggin headphones in a few times and the volume magically started working again...
