Spinning circle when logging out

Hello everyone I'm having some trouble with my iMac. Almost every time I log out I receive a white screen with a spinning circle. After logging out I have to force shut down by holding the power button because of this. I have already tried to repair the disk. Any suggestions?

Please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":

  • Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
  • Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
  • Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
  • To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Thanks. To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:

User uploaded file

Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.

It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.

Copy and paste its output in a reply.

Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.

EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

PACE is an anti-piracy app intended for Snow Leopard so it has been outdated for quite some time. Unless you have a reason for requiring its use, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to download its installer to use an uninstaller app. The only link I had for PACE is long since gone.

TunTap has not been updated in a long time either, and may not be compatible with Mavericks.

MacKeeper belongs to a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing system corruption that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Get rid of them and test your Mac for operation. If it does not perform normally, the possibility that using MacKeeper resulted in system corruption must be considered.

Get rid of MacKeeper by following these instructions exactly as written. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8) and last year's version.

Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.

  • If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
  • Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
  • Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
  • Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.

You will be asked to authenticate (twice):

User uploaded file

You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:

User uploaded file

Just Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.

After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

Nov 2, 2013 4:50 PM in response to FlameLegend

Third party modifications do not have to exist in your Applications folder, in fact most don't. If you don't know how to remove them, the only suggestion I have is to completely erase your system and rebuild it. MacKeeper is particularly notorious for causing system corruption, and that is often the only way to recover from the effects of having used it in the past.

By the way FreeMacSoft's AppCleaner is also installed on your Mac and belongs in the same category. Such junk only causes the kind of misery you're experiencing.

The good news is that MacKeeper is gone, and the bad news is that AppCleaner is still present.

Nevertheless your Mac may be suffering the effects of having used them, which is system corruption. The only guaranteed recovery from that is to completely erase your system and rebuild it, but if you want to keep removing those troublesome items and re-testing, you have nothing to lose but time.

TunTap and PACE are still present also.

Nov 2, 2013 6:27 PM in response to FlameLegend

You also have this worrying item installed…

Launch Daemons:

com.WesternDigital.WDSmartWareD.plist

It is believed to be causing a lot of external hard disks to be corrupted with Mavericks, there is a really long thread at…

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475611?start=0&tstart=0

The synopsis is DON'T CONNECT ANY EXTERNAL DISKS WITH RAID TO MAVERICKS. (Pardon my shouting, it is that important).

I'd also recommend removing the startup items, they are in a format that Apple deprecated some years ago. It suggests either the software is very old, or it is written by developers who don't follow guidelines.

Startup Items:

HP IO - Path: /Library/StartupItems/HP IO

tap - Path: /Library/StartupItems/tap

VirtualBox - Path: /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox

You can remove all the folders inside /Library/StartupItems/, the software will still be installed, but the system will no longer start them at boot. Items in this folder are loaded at a system level, so they can break things in strange ways.

The same applies to the Kernel extensions…

Kernel Extensions:

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv (4.1.18)

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB (4.1.18)

com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard (5.8)

foo.tun (1.0)

foo.tap (1.0)

They are also loaded at a very low level into the system. These items are stored inside /Library/Extensions/ and they should end in .kext

Your VirtualBox version seems to be from around 2012, update it.

You will need to reboot to ensure the files are unloaded.

Also the failed LauncDaemons & LaunchAgents are a concern, they could be failed because they are doing something the system is trying to block.

Remove the files that are marked [failed] from the following locations.

/Library/LaunchAgents/ /Library/LaunchDaemons/ and ~/Library/LaunchAgents/

All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.

Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).

Reboot for the system changes to take effect.

There is a quick test for you, considering how much 3rd party stuff you have running. Safe mode, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 . If that is much more usable it is because of all the crap that is set to run on login & at the system level. Safe boot will make some things not work, because it disables some core extensions - that is normal.

You have CleanMyMac installed, which has a bad reputation for deleting system files & generally using up the system resources with necessary tasks.

See some of the CleanMyMac threads for info on removal & whether you need it.

It's also worth checking if LogitechControlCenter is up to date, I think other uses have said it is incompatible with 10.9

Kernel Extensions:

Inside /Library/Extensions/

These also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.

Launchd jobs: several types

LaunchAgents - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents

LaunchDaemons - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons

User LaunchAgents - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents

These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also look at 'failed' jobs.

EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…

[loaded] - a running job

[not loaded] - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)

[failed] - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.

User login items:

Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.

These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot. When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.

3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:

/Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions.

Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.

Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).

Re-run EtreCheck to see if any items are still running, some apps will re-establish the background jobs when opened (hence the need to update or remove).
