Does your system profiler say anything about the optical drive, its specification, or type of disc it supports? Also, you could run Disk Utility and see if that optical drive appears in the hardware list, as sometimes they will even when there is no CD or DVD in the drive bay...
Could be if the optical drive was an original DVD read-only drive (not a super drive) it may have failed. The combo optical drive allowed one to play/record to CD and play (or boot system OS) from DVDs. So there is a chance the unit may have failed if it used to support playing DVDs and now does not. Or, if it is an aftermarket replacement and has some other issue now appearing after some time in use. Is this an internal drive or an external?
