Some things to try first:

1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)

• Launch Settings app

• Tap on Wi-Fi

• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

if you are using it for a lot of maps, consider returning your ipad air wifi for the ipad wifi air + cellular. for $129 extra you will get a real GPS chip, plus tmobile is giving away 200 mb of data a month. the additional accuracy and connectivity of a cellular enabled tablet will give you a better chance of getting your ipad back if its lost or stolen

i wish more apple bloggers would report on how much better find my iphone is on an ipad with a cellular data plan versus the wifi only model.. especially when the data plan is free for the life of the device

its makes it easier to justify the additional cost of $129 if it means finding your ipad in minutes versus months or years for someone to eventually find it, charge it, and allow it to connect to some wifi network it knows about.

i don't know if a lost wifi only ipad is more aggressive about connecting to unknown wifi networks. if your ipad is wifi only and locked with a pin, how is it going to connect to McDonalds or burger king or Starbucks and click "i agree" on their sign up page when your ipad gets stolen

your ipad air plus cellular plus free 200 mb data plan ( or any cellular dataplan if you do not like tmobile ) will get your ipad back if you lose it on the freeway off the hood of your car. try that with a ipad wifi.

Another update.

At work the ipad finds the location no problem, across multiple apps. However, when i try again at home - no app can locate me. Google Maps actually is stuck pointing to my work location. This suggests thre is some problem with my wifi at home?

But, as i mentioned above - i have an ipad 2 (wifi only) that has no problem locating me via this router.

Still mystified.

there is no mystery.

take it back or sell it and get the cellular model if you want it to locate you

if the wfi model cannot locate you it means that apple computer and/or skyhook wireless does not have a record of the wifi access points in your area. i belive there is a way to go to skyhook wireless's website and manually give it your network info and gps coordinates. but i don't know it now. maybe you can ask some neighbors who havve iphones to enable track my location and drive around the block a couple times e day and send those wifi scans to apple.com

wifi location is a best guess. GPS is not

this is what you get when do not pay you pay $129 exrtra for the cellular model

rest of message is offtopic please stop here

if you really rely on finding your ipad when it is lost or stolen, buy the ipad air cellular with free tmoble 200 mb a month. if it gets lost or stolen you will know exactly where it is, a lot faster vs the wifi model.

the wifi model has to be able to scan your neighbors wifi hotspots and send those results back to apple to respond to find my iphone and to tell apple where it is.

if the wifi model is locked then how is it going to connect to McDonalds and click on i agree to have apple tell it where it thinks it is?

if a wifi model gets lost on the freeway because it fell off the roof of your car how is it going to find out where itis ? maybe someone with an open wifi hotspot will drive by in a traffic jam, but that is about it

it used to be easy to dismiss the extra cost of a data plan and the cellular model as too expensive, and you do not need it because wifi is so abundant , but now with t mobile giving away 200 mb a month and the new security measures in ios 7, i think the rules are changed and i am encouraging all my friends to get the cellular model and tmobile so they are more likely to get thier lost or stolen ipads back

Apple no longer uses location resources from Skyhook, that changed a few years ago in iOS 3.x.

I suspect that if one Wi-Fi iPad is fine and the other is not on the same network, then the new iPad's Location settings need to be checked, or perhaps it takes a bit of time for the location information to populate in the new device.
