massive data loss after upgrading to 10.9, backed up in TM
hey
I have upgraded from 10.8 to 10.9 (Mavericks). After the installation, I couldn't use my virtual machine I need for work (MS Word), so I deleted the pvm file, emptied trash, then I noticed that the huge size of the file (about 40GB) is still not available on my internal SSD the OS X runs on.
Before upgrading, of course I have backed up everything with Time Machine - to my external Western Digital 1 TB HDD.
So now I could boot from the recovery partition, format the internal SSD, verify disk, verify permissions (no repairing was needed) and install Mavericks again directly from Apple's servers.
through Migration Assistant I transffered my user with all to the data to the internal SSD again.
Now I saw I have everything back to normal but the ENTIRE music folder (about 80GB of my precious favourite hand picked music I've collected during the latest years) is not there...
I am not sure what else is missing in the mean time, but I DO have too much free space on my SSD.
I got this e-mail from WD a few days ago:
Dear WD Registered Customer,
UPDATE: November 1st, 2013
As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks and are experiencing difficulty in accessing your external hard drive, please do not save anything to the drive, disconnect the drive from your computer, and contact Western Digital Customer Service at http://support.wd.com/country/ for further assistance.
The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years. However, solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.
Sincerely,
Western Digital
I immediately uninstalled these applications. I can access my external HDD but I have no clue how to get my music folder back.
in iTunes I see nothing, as if it's a new computer with no library of music loaded in it.
searching in spotlight finds nothing, but maybe I could find the lost data in the 'Backups.backupdb' folder of the time machine on the HDD?
