Does the Apple MacBook charger have built in surge protection?
Just wondering if its risky to plug straight into a wall/extension cord or if the charger has built in surge protection. Thanks!!
MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The REAL TRUTH is in a lighting strike there is NO SUCH THING as surge protection.
Ive sat in on ham radio conferences where some of the smartest minds alive talk about lighting protection for radio equipment, and Ive seen more than a few arrays of expensive hardware destroyed that were zapped by a lightning strike......
EVEN THOUGH they were passed thru extremely expensive surge protector assemblies costing in the many 1000$
Point being, in a lighting strike, the notion of surge protection doesnt exist, period. The amps and volts that can pass thru to destroy equipment is far far faster than any surge protection can shut it down.
Even TV stations get fried equiment in a strike even though they have $20,000+ surge protection hardware
😊
Right. My point was just that i dont have one main place i charge it since im all over the place between school, home, dorm, library, etc and Dont really have one outlet to attach a protector to.
Thanks for the advice!
If others in those places have not experienced significant issues, you probably have little concern.
The travel one, from the picture, is very small and can fit in a backpack for easy carrying.
Goos luck, happy travels.
Haha thanks for that doom and gloom report. Ill make sure to keep my rMBP far away from an outlet during a storm. Btw my dad used to do ham radio in the late 50s early 60s and speaks so fondly of it.
It does have some built-in protection, but I would buy a stronger surge protector, especially one that has a DSL-line surge protector to defend your router/modem against spikes.
Thanks! But what about when Im out for example the library like do i need to bring one with me bc afterall, its a laptop and inherently mobile...
Libraries probably protect their systems already. If you are really paranoid Belkin at least makes a "mini travel surge protector" for $25. Has 3 3-prong plugs.
