Q: No sound on iPad 3 after iOS 7 update.

After upgrading my third-generation iPad to iOS 7 (now running 7.0.3), no sound comes out of the speakers. Now, I have to use headphones. Apple says it's a hardware issue, but as soon as I upgraded to 7, the speakers died. Does anyone have a solution? Between myself and the "Geniuses" at Apple, we have tried all of the usual stuff (restart, reset, reset all settings, etc). The only thing Apple suggested is that I buy a new iPad (imagine that). I feel like this happened on purpose so that I would buy a new device. I didn't purchase AppleCare when I bought the iPad in March 2012, and I feel like Apple is purposefully going after those people without care plans and disabling their devices in some small but important way when we download the iOS 7 update (Plenty of people online have complained of the same thing that has happened to my device.). Further, Apple refuses to roll back my iPad to a previous OS...they've covered their bases and they're hoping we don't fight back while they work to keep this ridiculous (in my opinion, manufactured) glitch out of public discussion. So...any ideas on fixing the device rather than replacing it at cost?

I'm in the same position as you Corneliusmac. I've also tried all these suggestions and none have worked.

Just working out what's best to do regarding contacting apple. Would you recommend ringing before going in store? Also, did they hint at any possibilty of a fix to this bug in a future update?

I don't know if calling Apple costs money...I believe it does. I contacted the Better Business Bureau about it and communicated with Apple through them. Apple just sent me a canned legal response about how they make great products. Also, they didn't hint at a bug fix, and that's consistent with Apple's MO. They're banking on consumers just giving up and buying a new device (like the Air, which actually has the right hardware for iOS 7) rather than awaiting a promised bug fix, which would cut into the company's bottom line. I have seen a lot of complaints about iOS 7 from a lot of people by searching online...Apple refuses to take any responsibility or to make things right (at the same time, a tech at a store told me it's not a common problem...but it is). As for me, I am not going to buy another iPad; if a fix comes out, I will apply it. If it works, great, but I'm not going to buy another device...I didn't use my iPad for productivity anyway, so, no loss there. The company is being wrecklessly uncooperative with customers in the hopes of raising profits, plain and simple - if you get anywhere with Apple, please do let me know; I also found that their customer service at various stores is not the same. One guy on this thread had his device replaced for the same problems I'm having (He was also out of warranty without AppleCare.). Cheers!

I would call first.  When I called they looked up my serial number and saw that I didn't have AppleCare, but they would not charge me for this phone call.  If I called back regarding another issue, then they would have to charge me.  You have to be patient with them and go through all the instructions they give you.  Once I was transferred to a senior genius, that's when he said they would replace it for me.  It was 5 months out of warranty with no AppleCare.

Here’s what helped me today, after 7.0.3 suddenly only gave sound for headphones, the volume buttons did not do anything (except when plugging in headphones) and an update to 7.0.4 did not help:

I took a wooden toothpick and carefully cleaned the headphone jack and the connector at the bottom. Voilá, sound is back.

Same thing happened my wife's iPhone.  Got lint sutck in the headphone jack, so the device though headphones were connected when they weren't.  Took it to the Apple Store, they carefully cleaned out the headphone jack, and it started working again as expected.

If you don't have a local Apple Store to take your device to, DO NOT blow into the headphone jack with your mouth.  That will cause all kinds of moisture to enter the inside of the device, which could make things worse!  Instead, try using canned air, a small vacuum/suction nozzle or inserting and removing the a headphone jack a few times (gently) and twisting it while inserted.

NOTE: I don't expect this to solve every poster's issue, but it may help some folks.

I've had this happen twice so far on my IPad, nothing clears it except when I go to settings/general//accessibility and move the left to right balance control which restores my sound.

Even I got the same problem like you. I was using hangout when suddenly the sound went out. I can still use my headphones on my iPad. There is no sound after that. I tried all the method above still no success. I am using iPad 3 with iOS 7.0.4

Hi again. I've since called Apple and was given a booking at the local Genius bar instore. My problem is likely unfixable and was put down by the person looking at it as an internal logic board malfunction which means that the sound output wasn't being routed to the speakers properly. I don't really understand how a software update could cause a hardware problem, but nevertheless I was given a number of options by the guys instore. They were good in saying that despite it being out of warranty and not being under apple care, it can be replaced for free under a consumer buisines claim providing that the iPad was bought directly from Apple. Otherwise I can get it replaced for £250. I'm currently waiting to hear from the people who loaned me the iPad as to whether it is from Apple or another third party...

Apple refused to help me. They maintain I should buy a new iPad. And yes, my problem is still there.

Well, let me know if they actually replace it. The place where I went - in Cincinnati - basically said, "Here, you can buy a brand new iPad 3 (running iOS 7...uuugggh) for $299." That's crazy; their software junked my device. It is a pure software issue. But to answer you about software affecting hardware, if the software caused the hardware to deliver too much power to the speaker module, then it could have experienced a blowout during the update process. Apple, of course, will deny that being the case (or any other scenario that puts the responsibility on them). I think Apple just wants to keep all of these problems quiet. So much for customer service.

Dear Corneliusmac, I had the same problem with my Ipad 3, only sound of ringtones and youtube worked for the speakers, everything else was dead unless I used speakers, I tried lots of stuff and suddenly i accidentally took a snapshot using the hold+home buttons at the same time, the music was "on"  at the time and it seems the camera sound somehow triggered the music and it started to work normally again for music and apps.

    Hope this helps

I had exactly the same problem. The problem is that the on/off button also switches off the sound. Press on/off on side of iPad will switch on the sound, but of course this switches off your iPad too! So, you press it again to switch iPad back on and it switches the sound off again !! Doh! a catch-22

So how do you press this button without switching off your iPad ?

    THIS IS HOW TO FIX:

Press and hold the on/off button (on the side of iPad) and then press the "HOME" (round button on the front of the ipad) at the same time. This will take a screenshot AND switch the sound back on at the same time.

    Hope this helps !!

    best wishes, Rick

Our iPad was exhibiitng the same symptoms- no sound. I created this account to share with you what just worked for me.

We have an AppleTV which was hijacking the sound on our iPad. The AppleTV had AirPlay on by default. Once I turned off the AirPlay, the sound issue went away.

I bet our iPad sound would have worked outside of our home network, but the device rarely leaves the home. I should probably tinker more with the AppleTV, but I thought I would post this here for folks experiecing this nasty 'No Sound' issue.

    Good luck.

Question: Does ANY sound work at all? Does the Camera shutter make a sound? What happens when you plug in headphones? Any sound then? I don't have any further help, but maybe this will help you diagnose your issue.

Thanks, benschaaf. I do not have any AirPlay enabled devices. Nor does the AirPlay icon even appear on my iPad (swiping up from the bottom, for example). Nothing makes sound...but the headphones work.

All of the sudden yesterday, my iPad played one second of music (out of the blue). It immediately stopped and has been silent ever since again. This destroys Apple's theory that it's a hardware malfunction and supports what I've been trying to tell them: it's a software issue. Also, when I mute/unmute (using the side switch) the device, the graphic displayed shows "ringer" at full volume. But as the graphic starts to fade, the graphic shows volume off...is that supposed to happen? Bottom line, Apple is wrong...this is a software issue, and I just proved it. Of course, Apple will probably still deny it.
