Q: Kernel Panics in brand new Retina MBP running Mavericks

Hello!

So I recently purchased a new MBP from the most recent updated line. It's less than a week old, and was purchased to replace another MBP that had serious hardware issues and near constant kernel panics. After waiting months for the updated line to once again have a working laptop, I'm quite dismayed that tonight I have experienced two kernel panics that have crashed an restarted my new computer. During both panics, I was running both Chrome and VLC. The first happened as I clicked the Chrome icon in the dock and the second one happened right after I started playing a video in VLC and went into fullscreen.   Unfortunately there are no available appointments at the Genius Bar tomorrow, and I won't be able to book an appointment I can actually make it to until next weekend. I was hoping someone might be able to offer me some insights into what might be causing this?

Here's the info:

No need. This issue is clearly known considering the amount of people experiencing the issue. I'll just wait for it to get patched.

I'm having the same problem, however it seems photoshop cc is triggering the kernel panics for me. Apologies, I started a new forum topic, before I found this one:

I've had a couple of kernel panics in the two months of owning a MacBook Pro Iris i7 (11,2). In once case, I had a thunderbolt drive connected. Just now, I had a flash card in the expansion slot.

Can anyone tell me what's causing it? 3rd Party extensions? Much obliged.

The only kernel extensions you're loading are for Logitech devices. I'm not sure how current they are, but looking at the Logitech page, I do see that the most current version is for "10.9.x bug fixes".

    Hi Bob,

I just checked and I do have the latest Logitech driver installed. My Logitech devices are fairly new. I didn't have them when I experienced my first kernel panic. I know two panics in two months is probably not anything to worry about. But I still don't like them.

I didn't mention that this morning's kernel panic occurred when I was restarting the computer, so it happened just after rebooting up. I had ejected the Storedge Card, but had forgotten to pull it out. But certainly that shouldn't cause a panic though.

    George,

Yeah, I looked at those because they're the only kernel extensions you're loading. And you're right, you should pretty much never see them. I'm going to suggest you run Etrecheck and post the results here. It gives more info about other things you're loading at startup.

It turns out you do have another kernel extension, keyremap4macbook. I'm not familiar with it, but it's something I'd uninstall if hunting for an intermittent problem like this. The other thing you have as a login item is Solar Service. I'm not familiar with that one either. With Solar Service, you can just remove it as a login item. On keyremap4macbook, be sure to use the uninstall program rather than just dragging it to the trash so that you get everything.

Intermittents are tough, whether you're working on a computer or a car. I'd much rather have one that's just flat out broken or repetitive, then you know immediately when it's fixed.

according to the IT guy -- has too many connections on the 2.4GHz band

That can be a problem in crowded neighborhoods, but the solution is to use a replacement or additional Dual-band Wireless Access point or Router connected via Ethernet.

I just added a new Apple Extreme Base Station as a Wireless Access Point, in addition to my existing Router, and connected all by Gigabit Ethernet. Speed on Macs increased fivefold or more (even without using 802.11ac). The Apple base Station uses 2.4GHz and 5Ghz simultaneously, and connecting them via Ethernet uses no WiFi bandwidth to support the next Access Point.

At a cost of about US$250, there is no excuse for not moving quickly on such improvements to infrastructure.

But the idea that limited bandwidth crashes you Mac is utter nonsense.

    Grant,

Did you mean to post this in this thread? George here started posting in an old thread, thought I'd try to help.

Solar Service must be related to my Logitech keyboard which is solar powered. I just noticed in Console that it is writing literally thousands of log entries like every couple of seconds.

Don't know if that might be contributing to the problem or not, but I'm going to remove it on general principle.

What about the key remap thing?

    Hi Bob,

That's a handy little doohickey that allows me to remap the "Home" and "End" keys. I'm working on a 400-page novel and every time I accidentally hit one of those keys, I'm taken very far away from where I was (cursor and all). I don't consider KeyRemap very suspect right now, but if I get any more kernel crashes, I'll look at it again. As you say, my kernel crashes are so intermittent to make troubleshooting difficult. Thanks for all your help.

OK, good luck then. Post back if things don't improve. One more thing... be sure to make regular backups. The last thing you want to happen is to have a catastrophic failure and lose everything. Especially a 400 page novel.

What do you mean? My response was perfectly appropriate...
