I was texting someone when my phone died and they were still able to send imessages that showed up as delivered even though my iphone was dead. How did this happen? (I have an iphone5 and the other person has an iphone 4.)

the messages just went in the air as a holding space, you should get the messages when you turn your phone back on. if you have other devices linked to your iMessage they will show up on those devices as well.
