Time Machine won't restore pre mavericks data

I finally bit the bullet and did a clean install of Mavericks.

I was hopping to use my Time Machine to restore data from my old account.

This is not happening, the data is still there but it only wants to access data backed up since the install.

I can manually enter Time Machine from finder and locate the files.

Those files have the "Do not enter" red circle with the white bar.

I could probably brute force the settings on each directory but that shouldn't need to be done.

Any know of a way to fix this?

I was getting errors stating I didn't have permissions to access it even though I have the sam password being used.

Use Migration Assistant to restore your files > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html

The problem with a clean install is that Time Machine detects your Mac as a new one even if it's the same that the one you used to create backups, and this is the reason why it doesn't let you restore files. If you want to restore individual data, see > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html
