How to open MS Word 2004 documents with pages?

How can I open MS word 2004 documents after updating from OS X 10.6 to Mavericks? I bought Pages believing I could leave the MS World behind me.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), Pages 5.0 downloaded today

Just open the .doc file into a Pages document, then save as a Pages document.

When I try to open a Word .doc in Pages, I get the message 'xxx can't be opened' - what is the problem?
