The Wine Bug

Q: Mavericks pinks nikon raw?

Since upgrading to Mavericks my Nikon RAW images show up in both finder preview and in the preview app as being pink. Does anyone know if I ought to install a plugin or how to get them shown properly in Mavericks? Thanks!

I've got the same problem.  Also does the same thing if you choose raw images as desktop background.

I checked the Nikon web site, no plugins for OSX.

I checked apple's support pages, and the page:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5371

mentions that my Nikon (D90) is "Supported by OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later"

Does anyone know if we Nikon camera owners need to install a specific third party plugin to make Nikon RAW shots compatible with out macs? Do we need to install something from Apple?

Surely, NEF files are not supposed to be pink by Apple.

I went ahead and installed the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.09

    You can find it at

    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1681

After installing the update, the nikon NEF raw files are no longer pink.

Unfortunately, the update won't install unless you have Iphoto or Aperture installed (and neither are free).  Anyone know how to get around that or another solution?

    Thanks.

Do you have a trial of a pre-mavericks version of ilife or aperture? If so, Apple gives you the new version for free through the app store.

If not, do you have the original install CD's from your mac? I bet there is a trial of iphoto or aperture on those DVD's, and gain, Apple gives you the new version for free.

That's how I got the camera update and finally Nikon working.

Granted, the KB about Mavericks support for camera's tells the Nikon camera's are supposed to work, but not so in our experience:

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5955

You could always turn to Adobe with their

Adobe DNG Converter and Camera Raw

It is free, and maybe it helps you open your NEF without having to install Apple's apps to get the camera upgrade.

Or to the free Nikon View NX.

    Hope this helps!

All of these solutions are of course not supporting our camera's natively and out of the box as the KB from Apple would suggest, and involve installing additional software. I'm afraid I don't know of a method to get Mavericks support our camera's natively without one of these added softwares.

Finally got around to taking your advice.  I installed all the bundled apps that came with the O/S.  It included Iphoto which I then updated via Software Updates.  Then I installed the 4.09 compatiblity raw update and voila! It works great again.

    Thanks for your advice!!
